About The Position

As a Sign Maker, you will design and fabricate informational and regulatory signs and markings for airport buildings, offices, equipment, vehicles, roadways, and grounds. Sign Maker Serves in the Structures and Grounds Division of the Engineering and Maintenance Department at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) or the Airport Maintenance Department at Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD). Designs and fabricates informational and regulatory signs and markings utilizing various graphic arts equipment. Ensures that completed sign work is accurate and meets work order requirements. Performs related functions.

Requirements

Four years of progressively responsible experience in sign making trades.
Journey level (full performance) knowledge of and skill in the sign making trade to design, layout, and produce signs.
Skill in using a computer to prepare final layout and lettering for signage.
Skill in using sign-making equipment, software, and tools and measuring instruments to prepare finished signs and ensure accurate placement of lettering.
Skill in operating and controlling precision metal handling equipment (e.g., drill press, punch, cutting machine) to meet fabrication and installation requirements and tolerances with exact measurements.
Ability to analyze data and information (including blueprints and schematics) and use shop mathematics to calculate angles, pitch, and irregular curves.
Ability to work independently and on multiple projects at the same time.
Ability to work safely and knowledge of the safety rules, regulations, and procedures to do so.
Ability to speak and write effectively.
Skill in using a computer and computerized work order and time and attendance systems.
A high school diploma or a Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
A state driver’s license in good standing.
[DCA ONLY] A Class B CDL within 90 days of hire, promotion, or placement in the job.
Operates vehicle airside and landside (requires AOA permit).
Work requires moderate to heavy physical exertion (lifting objects up to 50 pounds).
May bend, stoop, crouch, kneel, and work in a cramped position or work on ladders, lifts or scaffolding.
May be subject to potential hazards common to the airport environment and sign making and installation.
Wears personal protective gear, as necessary.
Is subject to hold-over and recall on a 24-hour basis for essential services and emergencies such as snow removal.

[IAD ONLY] Knowledge of striping procedures and equipment.
Knowledge of Federal and state requirements and specifications for regulatory signs to design, fabricate, and install signs in accordance with requirements and specifications.

Responsibilities

Designs and fabricates informational and regulatory signs and markings for airport buildings, offices, equipment, vehicles, roadways and grounds.
Uses various graphic arts and sign-making equipment, including design software, RIPs, large-format printers and plotters, Laser engravers, and various finishing hand tools for preparation of signs.
Designs, lays out, and fabricates signs, based on work orders, specifications, drawings, or oral instructions.
Determines style, dimensions, letter size, color, spacing, margins, grammar, and abbreviations to achieve clarity, a pleasing effect, and good eye appeal.
Fabricates traffic signs and stencils for roadway markings in accordance with Federal and State regulatory specifications.
Produces completed lettering, using a sign-making computer, for application to sign surfaces.
Uses software to determine layout of signs, inputting information concerning dimensions, letter size, symbols, and wording.
Cleans work area, tools, and equipment on completion of assignments.
Maintains inventory of materials, assesses stock levels, and contacts vendors to obtain price information.
Assigns tasks and provides instruction to Structures employees assigned to sign work.
[IAD ONLY] May paint or assist in painting interiors and exteriors of airport structures, roads, runways, and equipment.
[IAD ONLY] May assist in vehicle repair and painting and special projects.
