About The Position

The sign maintenance technician is under the general supervision of the construction superintendents/ administrative safety- asset control coordinator, and is responsible for all signs and types of signing for Benton County. This position is responsible for supplying, making, installing and maintaining County signs. This position must work closely with the 9-1-1 Administration Office, Benton County Offices, and the State of Arkansas to insure MUTCD guide lines are followed and properly installed signs.  This position is also accountable for the management of the sign shop, which includes a sign plotter, computer, software, and equipment for sign placement and maintenance.

  • The ability to maintain the operational integrity of all computer equipment, updating computer programs, and methods for more efficient production and installation of signs.
  • The ability to keep inventory of sign blanks, posts, and other materials.
  • Must have a valid Arkansas driver’s license and to operate a vehicle and all other equipment related to the position
  • High school diploma or GED and computer/cartography training are required to start this position.
  • Must possess excellent human relation skills to work with the general public.
  • Must provide direct support and assistance to the Benton County Administration, Benton County Road Department, and Benton County 9-1-1 Administration Office.
  • Must promote the best image of the County and show courtesy to the general public.
  • Must be able to operate two-wheel and four-wheel drive County owned vehicles in both day/night time conditions and all weather and road conditions
  • Must be able and willing to work long extended hours, weekends, late nights and holidays when necessary.
  • Must be able to squat, bend over at the waist, perform other physical movements necessary to traverse property, in wooded, grassy areas, non-paved roads, construction sites and undeveloped lands.
  • Must be able to climb ladders or crawl in tight spaces.
  • Must be able to regularly stand and walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, use hands to handle or feel objects and talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close distance vision and the ability to adjust focus, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
  • Travel by foot across all types of terrain found in Benton County to access areas under construction in all outside weather conditions.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Push /pull occasionally required.

Nice To Haves

  • CDL is preferred but not required.
  • Two years of coursework in computer science preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Follows Benton County Road department safety rules and regulations.
  • Manages day to day operation of the County sign shop.
  • Fabricates and installs road signs or any other signs deemed necessary by the County.
  • Works with the county administrators and 9-1-1 Administration Office in constructing new or replacing stolen or vandalized road signs and posts. Knowledgeable in State and County compliance and standards. If signs are damaged or destroyed this position must be prepared to make and reinstall these immediately.
  • Coordinates with the State Highway Department on bridge signing (i.e. weight limits, hazard notifications, etc.)
  • Reads, interprets, and keeps current on all state laws pertaining to signs and sign installation.
  • Keeps an updated database inventory of assigned roads as named and color of signs (green-county road, blue-limited public access, white-private drive)
  • Makes sound decisions on the serviceability of installed signs.
  • Is responsible for maintaining and handling inventory, 9-1-1 Administration and County property, equipment, and software.
  • Operates professionally and safely all machinery related to sign maintenance. (i.e. heavy-duty post driver, chainsaw, sign maintenance truck, and any other equipment related to this position.
  • Assists and coordinates the needs of the road department, 9-1-1 Administration Office and all other County offices.
  • Must be able to perform duties without direct supervision.
  • Must have the computer knowledge to run the sign making software for all County signage.
  • Responsible for determining the best way to recycle, re-build and re-use sign materials.
  • Assists road building and road surfacing crews in determining placement and wording for temporary traffic control signage.
  • Regular and reliable attendance required.
  • On call 24/7 for emergency and inclement weather, CDL is preferred but not required.
  • Applies herbicides to the county right of ways if required and certified.
