About The Position

The Sign Language Interpreter (DHH Educational Interpreter) will assist the Teacher of the Deaf & Hard of Hearing to provide services necessary for the educational programming and academic improvement of children aged birth to 21 years with a diagnosed hearing loss as assigned by the supervising Teacher of the Deaf & Hard of Hearing. Under the supervision of the Exceptional Children's Director or other designee, and Teacher of the Deaf & Hard of Hearing, the educational interpreter assists teachers and offers support in the implementation of instructional activities in the school setting. He/she will use a variety of methods, materials, and equipment at the direction of and in support of the Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

Requirements

  • AA degree in interpreting or related field
  • At least a 3.5 on the EIPA
  • Individuals serving as an Educational Interpreter must annually complete 20 hours of professional learning related to interpreting that the local education agency has approved.
  • Competence in the communication modality used by the student who is deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Competence in English grammar, including syntax, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Working knowledge of typical language development.
  • Strong interpersonal skills in relating to students and adults.
  • Working knowledge of the subjects being interpreted.
  • Understanding of deafness and its impact on language development.
  • Skill in expressive transliterating/interpreting at a rate commensurate with conversational speech and class lectures.
  • Adequate reverse interpreting/transliterating skill while maintaining the integrity of the message.
  • Ability to work as part of an Individualized Education Program team.
  • Must be physically able to lift and move objects related to the job functions.
  • Requires the ability to read forms and materials associated with the job functions.
  • Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
  • Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, and to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in standard English.
  • Requires the ability to add, subtract, divide, and multiply.
  • Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes accurately in using instructional objects.
  • Requires the ability to differentiate between colors or shades of color.
  • Requires the ability to talk and hear.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitates communication between the student and his peers and the student and adults in the school environment.
  • Studies the lesson content prior to class to ensure an accurate representation of the material.
  • Tutors students who are deaf or hard of hearing under the direction of the teacher.
  • Provides feedback to teachers upon request.
  • Serves as a liaison to promote positive and cooperative relationships within the school environment.
