About The Position

The Sign Language Interpreter facilitates effective communication between individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing and individuals who can hear. This role provides real-time interpretation using American Sign Language (ASL), including signing, finger spelling, and non-verbal communication techniques. The position ensures accurate, culturally appropriate, and professional interpretation services in support of organizational and stakeholder needs. Requirements

  • Approximately four (4) years of experience providing professional sign language interpretation services.
  • Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL).
  • Current National Interpreter Certification (NIC) credential from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) required.
  • Strong understanding of Deaf culture and communication norms.
  • Ability to provide interpretation in professional, technical, and formal settings.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards.
  • Ability to perform in dynamic, live communication environments.
  • Bachelor’s Degree (BS/BA) in Business, Deaf Studies, Linguistics, Communications, or related field required;OR equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide real-time interpretation services between spoken English and American Sign Language (ASL).
  • Facilitate communication in meetings, briefings, training sessions, interviews, and other engagements.
  • Utilize signing, finger spelling, and appropriate body language to ensure clarity and accuracy.
  • Maintain neutrality and professionalism during interpretation sessions.
  • Ensure accurate and complete communication of content, tone, and intent.
  • Adhere to ethical standards and professional guidelines established by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID).
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information encountered during interpretation.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders to clarify terminology or context when necessary.
  • Prepare for interpretation assignments by reviewing relevant materials as appropriate.
