About the position

Allied Instructional Services (AIS) is seeking experienced and certified Sign Language Interpreters to provide in-person interpreting services in Norfolk, VA. The role involves working closely with educational teams to support students who are deaf or hard of hearing, ensuring their success in various educational settings. The position requires interpreters to deliver effective communication services tailored to the needs of individual students, adhering to the established modes of communication. Interpreters will be expected to maintain a professional demeanor and appearance, demonstrating the highest standards of conduct in line with the RID Code of Ethics and Professional Code of Conduct. In this role, interpreters will establish and maintain collaborative relationships with educational staff, parents, students, and community members. They will participate in meetings such as child study sessions, IEP meetings, and triennial reviews, providing valuable input regarding students' communication abilities and needs. The position also requires interpreters to document communications and travel for review by supervisors, ensuring transparency and accountability in their work. The ideal candidates will possess a minimum of EIPA 3.5 certification or equivalent credentials, such as RID/NIC certification or state-level certification like VQAS level 3. They must be willing to travel and have reliable transportation, especially when not working remotely. Compensation will be provided for both direct service time and portal time, reflecting the commitment to supporting the educational needs of students in the community.

Responsibilities

  • Provide interpreting services to individuals who are deaf/hard of hearing in an effective and appropriate manner.
  • Establish and maintain professional and collaborative relationships with educational staff, parents, students, and community members.
  • Demonstrate professional judgment in all assignments and exhibit comprehensive knowledge of the RID Code of Ethics/Professional Code of Conduct.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demonstrate behavior conducive to a professional setting.
  • Attend meetings as requested, including child study, IEP meetings, and triennial reviews.
  • Participate in meetings to provide input regarding an individual's communication ability and skills.
  • Work with the educational team to ensure access to communication and the curriculum throughout the school day.
  • Function within the school environment as a positive member of the educational team.
  • Maintain records to document communications and travel for review by supervisor as requested.

Requirements

  • Must hold minimal credentials of an EIPA 3.5 or higher, or RID/NIC certification, or state-level certification such as VQAS level 3.
  • Must be willing to provide interpreting services in a variety of educational settings and at all educational levels.
  • Must be willing to travel and possess reliable transportation.
