About The Position

This position performs sign to voice and voice to sign interpretation in the classroom and other educational settings to facilitate communication between Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH) students, teachers, staff, and other students. Interprets information, lectures, discussions, classroom activities, school meetings, assemblies, and field trips for the purpose of providing communication access. Prepares, previews and studies subject matter being taught or presented such as lesson materials, handouts, and videos to research vocabulary and assure appropriate terminology applicable to the subject or to the forum for lectures or assemblies for the purpose of ensuring that a clear interpretation can be provided. Ability to work with students within the parameters of the individualized education plan. Previous work experience with Deaf/hard of hearing students desired. Ability to work collaboratively as a team. May perform instructional activities under teachers guidance. Adapts interpretation to the varying and diverse needs and abilities of the students. Adheres to appropriate district guidelines for confidentiality and professional behavior. Effective spoken and written communication skills. Ability to interact effectively with others

Requirements

  • High School diploma, or equivalent.
  • American Sign Language fluency.
  • Must receive a fluent rating on the American Sign Language proficiency portion of the interview.
  • Successful clearance of the FBI and Washington State Patrol fingerprint background check.
  • Successful Washington State Sexual Misconduct clearance
  • Completion of federal I-9 form
  • Ability to regularly walk, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, push, pull.
  • Ability to walk fast and run.
  • Ability to be on feet/stand most of the day.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Effective spoken and written communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous work experience with Deaf/hard of hearing students desired.
  • Previous successful work with children is preferred.
  • Interpreter Training Program completion is preferred.
  • Documentation of having met EIPA Written and Performance Standards is preferred.
