About The Position

The Sierra Club California Director is responsible for the overall strength, functioning, and growth of Sierra Club California, ensuring the sustainability of the organization's work in the state. This role involves collaborating with the Chapter Executive Committee, local chapters, and Field Department staff to grow a base of supporters, nurture leaders, build effective campaigns, engage donors, and achieve organizational priorities. The Director will set programmatic and administrative goals, develop and implement strategies for operations and advocacy, and oversee financial resources and compliance.

Requirements

  • Proven leadership abilities and organizational management in nonprofit or volunteer-led organizations.
  • Experience in recruiting, coaching, and inspiring staff and volunteers.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities with excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong financial management skills, including budget preparation and reporting.
  • History of successfully generating new revenue streams in a mission-driven organization.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to effectively convey the Chapter's mission.
  • In-depth knowledge of grassroots organizing and commitment to environmental justice.
  • Demonstrated ability to address and resolve interpersonal conflicts.

Nice To Haves

  • Significant supervisory experience including direct management of multiple employees.
  • Knowledge and experience in legislative lobbying and political campaigns.
  • Experience developing and overseeing organizational budgets of $1 million or more.
  • Deep knowledge in climate, biodiversity, social justice, and environmental policy.
  • Knowledge of California's political and environmental landscape.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage California Chapter financial resources, ensuring good management of fiscal resources and timely reporting.
  • Develop an annual budget of over $1 million that balances c(3) and c(4) funds.
  • Guide and foresee Chapter budget, staffing, and resource needs to advance goals.
  • Aid in the development and implementation of Chapter fundraising goals through various sources.
  • Monitor and manage internal relationship building and effective communication across California chapters and staff.
  • Provide training and motivation to staff and volunteers, developing leaders and ensuring meaningful roles.
  • Directly supervise and manage Chapter staff, providing organizational structure and accountability.
  • Coordinate staff work to carry out objectives and conduct performance evaluations.
  • Oversee strategic and campaign planning and execution with various committees and staff.
  • Support and manage communications and external relations, advocating for the Sierra Club's positions.
  • Ensure accountability and compliance with financial and tax requirements.
