About The Position

The Shoring Manager is responsible for the full leadership, strategic planning, financial performance, and operational success of the Shoring Department. This role oversees all shoring‑related activities—including inventory, maintenance, logistics, engineering coordination, and field support—and holds primary responsibility for the department’s profit and loss (P&L). The Shoring Manager ensures safe, efficient, and cost‑effective operations that support company construction projects across all regions. Whitaker Construction, founded in 1953, has over 70 years of experience in the heavy civil and underground utility construction industry. Whitaker, an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan) company, has become one of the largest contractors in the Intermountain area with more than 600 employees and nearly 70 crews. We perform sanitary sewer, storm drain, culinary water, irrigation, earthwork, roadway construction, dams, landfills, natural gas pipelines, industrial piping, and telecommunication projects primarily in Utah, Idaho, Nevada, Wyoming, Colorado, and Oregon.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business, or related field; or equivalent industry experience.
  • 5–8 years of experience in construction or underground utilities, with at least 3 years in a leadership or management role.
  • Strong knowledge of shoring systems.
  • Demonstrated experience managing budgets, cost analysis, or P&L responsibilities.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Strong understanding of OSHA regulations, excavation safety, and shoring standards.

  • OSHA 30‑Hour Construction Certification
  • Certified Competent Person for Shoring and Excavation
  • Experience with ERP or equipment‑management systems
  • Equipment operation certifications (forklift, skid steer, etc.)

Responsibilities

  • Own full P&L responsibility for the Shoring Department, ensuring profitability and budget adherence.
  • Develop and manage annual budgets, financial forecasts, and cost‑control strategies.
  • Track and report financial performance metrics, identifying opportunities to reduce operating costs and increase departmental revenue.
  • Evaluate capital expenditure needs and justify investments to executive leadership.
  • Oversee all shoring operations including inventory, inspection, maintenance, logistics, and field support.
  • Ensure proper planning, fulfillment, and tracking of shoring equipment orders to job sites.
  • Maintain accurate inventory forecasting to support project schedules and avoid shortages or excess.
  • Implement operational standards, workflows, and performance benchmarks that improve reliability and turnaround times.
  • Lead all safety initiatives within the department; ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, company policies, and industry standards.
  • Oversee inspection protocols to ensure structural integrity and safe deployment of all shoring systems.
  • Conduct or delegate regular yard and site inspections to verify correct usage and condition of equipment.
  • Manage and mentor shoring foreman and yard crews.
  • Oversee hiring, performance reviews, training, and professional development for all shoring personnel.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, safety, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
  • Work closely with estimators, project managers, project engineers, superintendents and foremen to ensure shoring needs are integrated into project planning and execution.
  • Partner with the Equipment Department for procurement strategies and maintenance planning.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership to align departmental strategy with company goals.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all shoring‑related issues across job sites.
  • Ensure timely response to field requests, emergencies, or equipment failures.
  • Support engineering and operations teams with load calculations, system selection, and shoring best practices.
