About The Position

The Shop Welder is a critical member of the Maintenance and Operations team, responsible for the structural integrity, repair, and fabrication of heavy industrial equipment used in asphalt production and paving operations. This role focuses on the maintenance of stationary plant assets—such as conveyor systems, drum mixers, and storage silos—as well as the repair of mobile paving equipment such as tractor trailers, tandem dump trucks, brooms and associated paving equipment. The ideal candidate is a safety-conscious, self-motivated professional capable of performing high-quality welds in a shop environment and occasionally in "out-of-position" field scenarios to minimize plant downtime.

  • High school diploma, GED, or relevant experience
  • Vocational training or equivalent experience
  • 3+ year related experience in welding, fabrication, and maintenance of heavy equipment, in asphalt and paving preferred.
  • Welding and metalworking skills
  • Mechanical analysis
  • Design tools
  • Mechanical controls
  • Troubleshooting
  • OSHA regulations and compliance
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Detail oriented
  • Time management

Responsibilities

  • Perform weld buildup and hard-surfacing on high-wear components such as crusher liners, asphalt drum flights, and paving screeds to extend asset life.
  • Field lay out, cut, and fabricate steel parts and structures from blueprints or sketches to support plant upgrades and equipment modifications.
  • Utilize oxyacetylene torches, plasma cutters, and carbon air arc gouging to remove failed components or prepare surfaces for new welds.
  • Inspect and repair stationary machinery including conveyor systems, shakers, screens, gearboxes, and asphalt silos.
  • Perform structural and mechanical welding repairs on heavy mobile assets (e.g., loaders, pavers, and haul trucks).
  • Disassemble and reassemble machine parts using hoists, jacks, and hand tools to facilitate internal repairs.
  • Actively participate in Martin Marietta’s "Guardian Angel" safety program, ensuring a zero-harm environment for yourself and your team.
  • Conduct daily OSHA-mandated safety inspections of work areas, welding rigs, and specialized tools.
  • Inspect finished welds for cracks or defects using dye penetrants or visual inspection to ensure they meet structural standards and specifications.
  • Maintain accurate records of all maintenance work, supplies used, and hours logged to ensure a clear service history for all assets.
  • Monitor and report the status of welding consumables (wire, gas, rods) and tooling to the Shop Manager to prevent project delays.
  • Assist in the training of junior co-workers and operate support equipment like forklifts, man-lifts, and loaders as needed for shop operations.
  • Maintain accurate records of all maintenance work performed and manage the inventory of welding supplies and consumables.
