About The Position

Under the general direction of the Director of Maintenance, Shop Foreman, and Mechanics, the shop technician is responsible for performing basic mechanical repairs and preventative maintenance; provides support to Mechanics on more complex tasks; and contributes to the overall success of the Maintenance Department by working in a safe, efficient manner to keep the shop clean, organized, and well-stocked. This role requires a foundational understanding of mechanical systems and tools, along with a willingness to learn and develop skills in a hands-on environment.

  • Personal possession of a basic setup of wrenches, sockets, etc., to perform routine vehicle maintenance and service.
  • Responsible use of specialty tools and diagnostic equipment provided by the agency for more complex tasks.
  • High school diploma or equivalent: technical training is a plus.
  • Some experience in a mechanical or technical role is preferred but not required.
  • Must have a current Texas Driver’s License minimum: Class “B” with airbrake and Passenger endorsement or ability to obtain Class “B” in a timely manner to be determined by Director. Training and testing is available on site.
  • Must possess a valid form of identification for employment and any other identification documentation that may be requested when allowed or required by law
  • Must have a reliable means of transportation to and from work.
  • Mechanical aptitude that facilitates learning to troubleshoot all systems and identify problems using methods recommended by manufacturers and computer diagnostic software, and to expedite repair of defects.
  • Ability to read and correctly interpret technical writing in such sources as service instructions, parts manuals, and manufacturer’s websites.
  • Demonstrate good judgment and common sense in all activities.
  • Self-starter with ability to work independently with limited direction or supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Under general supervision, diagnose, service, and repair vehicles and equipment
  • Maintain tools and equipment, ensuring they are in good working condition
  • Maintain a clean, organized work area.
  • Collaborate with senior mechanics to learn best practices and techniques
  • Perform preventative and unscheduled maintenance inspections as prescribed by the MOUTD maintenance plan.
  • Maximize efficient use of vehicle repair parts and maintenance supplies.
  • Perform all duties using the safest methods, adhering to all safety policies and utilizing PPE as practicable; ensure the proper use of all safety equipment and instructions, and perform all duties as prescribed by the MOUTD Maintenance Plan and all other safety rules, policies, and procedures set forth by MOUTD's handbooks, manuals, training sessions, and communications.
  • Use diagnostic laptops, tablets, and specialized tools to identify issues; perform research as needed to identify best practices and address issues.
  • Complete work orders and update service records in a timely manner.
  • Assist with inventory, ordering parts, and picking up orders.
  • Provide general labor to maintain a state of good repair of the shop and all agency assets.
  • Other duties as assigned.
