About The Position

A Shop Tech I / Diesel Mechanic is a critical member of the service team, responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a range of equipment, from small engines to agricultural machinery. This role requires strong mechanical skills, professionalism, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team. Most work takes place in the shop, though occasional field support may be required. The technician ensures all work is completed safely, efficiently, and to high-quality standards, helping deliver reliable equipment performance and outstanding customer satisfaction.

Requirements

  • 2–3 years of experience as a mechanic working on small engines, diesel and gas engines, and small hand-held components.
  • Proven ability to assemble, perform maintenance, and execute basic diagnostics on equipment.
  • Must own and maintain a complete set of professional tools.
  • Basic computer skills for diagnostic and documentation purposes.
  • Ability to operate vehicles and equipment used for diagnostic purposes.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to maintain accurate documentation.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work flexible schedules and respond to after-hours calls as needed.
  • Professional, customer-focused demeanor with strong service skills.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working on John Deere equipment.
  • Technical training or certifications in diesel mechanics, agricultural equipment, or related fields.

Responsibilities

  • Perform complex diagnostics, service repairs, and maintenance on customer and dealer-owned equipment.
  • Ensure all work is completed safely, efficiently, and to high standards of quality.
  • Use diagnostic tools and technical manuals to troubleshoot and resolve mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues.
  • Make necessary repairs accurately and effectively.
  • Engage with customers as needed to explain repairs, provide updates, and answer questions.
  • Complete work assignments primarily in the shop environment.
  • Follow direction and guidance from the Service Manager or Shop Foreman as required.
  • Maintain a clean and organized workspace and proper care of tools and equipment.
