About The Position

Shop Diesel Mechanic (Level B) At Hi-Way Paving, we are general contractors in the construction field that specialize in significant amounts of concrete paving, storm drainage, and excavation on highways and airfields. We are seeking a Level B Diesel Mechanic to support our Charlotte-based operations. This position is primarily shop-based, with field service responsibilities as needed to support active projects. The Level B Mechanic performs intermediate-level diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs on diesel trucks and heavy construction equipment, working independently on routine repairs and assisting senior technicians with major component work. This role is critical to keeping our fleet operational, safe, and project ready.

Requirements

  • 2–5 years of experience as a diesel or heavy equipment mechanic
  • Strong working knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and undercarriage components
  • Experience working on tracked construction equipment
  • Basic to intermediate welding and fabrication skills
  • Ability to read service manuals, hydraulic schematics, and wiring diagrams
  • Ability to gain clearance for restricted/high-security zones (e.g., airport AOA, military bases).
  • Valid driver’s license, CDL preferred.
  • Physical ability to lift 50 lbs., climb, walk, kneel, squat, push, pull, and enter confined spaces.

  • Must be at least 18 years old to meet job-site safety and labor requirements.?

Nice To Haves

  • ASE Medium/Heavy Truck Certifications (T-series)
  • Experience with CAT, John Deere, Volvo, or similar heavy equipment brands
  • Experience with fleet maintenance software
  • Advanced hydraulic and undercarriage troubleshooting

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance on on-road trucks and off-road heavy equipment
  • Diagnose and repair diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems
  • Service and repair air and hydraulic brake systems
  • Troubleshoot suspension, steering, and drivetrain components
  • Inspect and repair tracked undercarriage systems (rollers, idlers, sprockets, chains)
  • Maintain and repair dozers, excavators, pavers, rollers, loaders, skid steers, and related equipment
  • Diagnose and repair hydraulic pumps, cylinders, valves, hoses, and control systems
  • Perform cooling system, fuel system, and exhaust repairs
  • Replace and repair transmissions, differentials, final drives, clutches, and track drive motors
  • Conduct equipment inspections to ensure compliance with DOT and OSHA standards
  • Utilize diagnostic software and scan tools to identify faults
  • Perform structural and minor fabrication repairs (MIG, stick, oxy-acetylene)
  • Respond to field service calls for on-site diagnostics and repairs
  • Accurately document work performed, parts used, and labor time
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized shop environment
