Howmet Aerospace is currently looking for a Shipping/Receiving Operator to join our Industrial Gas Turbine (IGT) group in Hampton, Virginia. The available shifts hours are 1st shift, M-F 7am-3pm. Training is 1st shift, M-F 7am-3pm. New Hire Starting Rate: $18.94 p/hr.; After 6 months: $21.05 p/hr. This position will receive an hourly "shift premium" of $1.00 p/hr. while assigned to an off shift. Job Summary: The Shipping/Receiving Operator will coordinate activities of workers engaged in verifying and keeping records on incoming and outgoing shipments and preparing items for shipment weekly. They will establish and coordinate departmental activities to meet objectives to coincide with plant goals.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required.
  • This position requires a minimum of one year of related experience and/or training.
  • Must be available for all shifts (including 2nd shift, 3rd shift, and weekend shift). Must be able to work overtime and weekends as the schedule varies depending on site operational needs; flexibility is required.
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • This position entails access to export-controlled items and employment offers are conditioned upon an applicant's ability to lawfully obtain access to such items.
  • Understanding of shipping notices, bill of lading, invoices. Knowledge of government import - export rules and regulations.
  • Reads and interprets documents such as EHS policies, operating and maintenance instructions, and activity instructions. Writes routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
  • Ability to prepare and recommend departmental budget requirements. Ability to use excel spreadsheets to prepare reports to management. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Solves practical problems. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Must be able to use independent judgment.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures inventory accuracy for raw materials under position's control.
  • Understands shipping notices, bills of lading, invoices, miscellaneous shippers and other records to determine shipping priorities, work assignments, and shipping methods required to meet shipping and receiving schedules.
  • Requires knowledge of domestic and international shipping and use of online shipping methods.
  • Ensures compliance with all DOT regulations.
  • Correctly classify and label hazardous material shipments
  • Ensures compliance with all import and export government rules and regulations. Submit export paperwork to freight forwarders.
  • Determines space requirements and position of shipment in trucks and lays out position of shipment.
  • Determines routing and legal load limits of trucks, according to established schedules and weight limits of states. Schedules customer funded trucks. Schedules expedited shipments as required.
  • Inspects loading operations to ensure compliance with shipping specifications, and seals loaded truck doors.
  • Inspects material handling equipment for defects and notifies maintenance personnel or contacts outside service facility for repair.
  • Maintains vehicle maintenance report.
  • Directs movement of shipments from shipping and receiving platform to storage and work areas
  • Maintains inventory of all shipping supplies, including boxes, packing material, tape labels and any special supplies
  • Develops and recommends annual budget requirements for the Warehouse and Receiving Department. Anticipate and request funding for future personnel requirements. Anticipate and request funding for future material handling equipment.
  • Establishes project plans and coordinates activities for continuous improvement initiatives.
