About The Position

The Shipping Clerk is responsible for the daily logistic operations, ensuring the accurate and timely movement of outbound steel in accordance with open in-house Sales Orders. This role maintains essential shipping record, maximizes value for the outbound shipments and verifies that all dispatched materials and accompanying documentation meet customer specifications prior to shipment.

Requirements

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write clear and concise correspondence.
  • Ability to apply common‑sense understanding to carry out detailed but routine written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to solve problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Working knowledge of INVEX as it pertains to shipping procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in documentation and data entry.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate, organized, and up‑to‑date shipping records and files.
  • Generate and annotate loading lists, packing lists, manifests, certifications, and computer‑generated bills of lading.
  • Complete all paperwork and forms accurately and without errors.
  • File shipping documents monthly for long‑term recordkeeping.
  • Verify that all items assigned to a driver match the pick list.
  • Calculate load weights based on carrier limits.
  • Interpret sales orders to ensure material ships correctly and on schedule.
  • Maintain the outbound shipping schedule for daily operational use.
  • Work closely with the Production Supervisor to prevent shipping delays.
  • Provide operational support as needed.
  • Collaborate with other departments, such as Sales and Quality, to ensure smooth operations and accurate order fulfillment.
  • Collaborate with third‑party logistics companies (like Bridgeway) to coordinate shipments.
  • When primary carriers cannot take an assigned load, source alternate freight companies and arrange pickup and delivery.
  • Maintain detailed logs of freight rates in accordance with company requirements.
  • Verify freight bills and costs using INVEX or a calculator.
  • Review freight invoices regularly to ensure accuracy and adherence to negotiated rates.
  • Communicate professionally via phone and email with internal departments- including Sales, Quality, Operations, and Accounting.
  • Present information effectively in one‑on‑one and small group settings with Operations, Sales, and Quality departments.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols outlined in the Employee Handbook to ensure personnel and facility protection.
  • Meet attendance requirements as defined in the Attendance Policy.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support and improve the efficient functioning of the shipping department.
