About The Position

A Shipfitter is responsible for fabricating, assembling, installing, and repairing metal structures and components on ships and other marine vessels. This role involves working from blueprints, technical drawings, and work orders to cut, shape, and fit metal plates, frames, and structural parts. Shipfitters ensure that all assemblies meet industry standards, safety regulations, and project specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and marine engineering drawings.
  • Lay out, cut, and shape metal plates and structural components using torches, saws, grinders, and various fabrication tools.
  • Fit and tack-weld metal parts in place to form ship structures, including bulkheads, decks, frames, and foundations.
  • Align components using levels, straightedges, and precision measuring tools.
  • Install and secure foundations for machinery, piping, and shipboard systems.
  • Perform metal repairs, including removal of damaged sections and installation of replacement parts.
  • Operate hand and power tools, including welding equipment, plasma cutters, and hydraulic presses.
  • Work alongside welders, pipefitters, electricians, and other trades in a shipyard environment
