Skilled tradesmen who performs the work of developing and laying out, fitting, bolting up, assembling and erecting plate, shapes, and pipe when used to form a part of a structural assembly in connection with ship construction, alteration, and repair specified by blueprints, work orders, or instructions from supervisor or management. The shipfitter is responsible for building and/or repairing the complete hull of a metal ship. The fitter has the primary responsibility for maintaining its watertight integrity. The shipfitter also manufactures and installs interior and exterior weldments such as: Bulwarks, Coamings, Doors, Foundations, Gratings, Hawse Pipes, Ladders, Mast, Bulkheads, King Post, Racks, Railing, Sea Chest, Stanchions, Stowages, Tanks, Trunks, Yardarms, and Hull Zincs. The shipfitter repairs and/or removes damage ship structures and fittings, prepares surfaces for welding, burning, riveting and lays out holes for drilling. This work is accomplished using miscellaneous hand and power tools. The shipfitter may also be required to perform as a roll operator, punch operator, shear operator, track burner, drill and saw operator. The shipfitter may also have to arrange for staging, crane service, ventilation, lighting, and support services (air, electricity, and water). The above description is general in nature.
