About The Position

Vigor Marine CM San Diego is currently seeking a Shipfitter Leadman to support our operations. The Shipfitter Leadman is responsible for leading and coordinating shipfitters, helpers, and welders engaged in the layout, fitting, alignment, and installation of shipboard structural components. The Leadman ensures work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with shipyard procedures, production schedules, drawings, and quality standards during second shift operations. The position works alongside first shift leadership through daily turnovers to ensure continuity of work and production progress between shifts.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum 5–10 years of shipfitting or structural steel fabrication experience in shipbuilding or ship repair environments.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability directing shipfitting crews in a production environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret shipyard structural drawings, blueprints, and work specifications.
  • Experience performing steel layout, fitting, burning, structural alignment, and structural assembly.
  • Knowledge of shipboard structural components including frames, decks, bulkheads, foundations, and reinforcements.
  • Experience performing structural work on U.S. Navy vessels or commercial ships.
  • Familiarity with NAVSEA standards and shipyard repair procedures.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of U.S. Navy ship repair standards and technical requirements including:
  • MIL-STD-22D – Welded Joint Design for Ship Structure
  • MIL-STD-1689 – Fabrication, Welding, and Inspection of Ship Structure
  • DM 10-623B – Structural Repair Manual for Naval Surface Ships
  • Experience working with HY-80 and HY-100 high-strength steels.
  • Current SMAW T-8 welding certification (ability to obtain and maintain certification in accordance with shipyard welding procedures).
  • Proficiency with shipfitting tools including oxy-fuel cutting equipment, grinders, magnetic drills, hydraulic tools, and alignment equipment.
  • Ability to work in physically demanding shipboard environments and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Previous Leadman or supervisory experience in a shipyard production environment.
  • Experience coordinating structural repairs on U.S. Navy surface combatants or auxiliary vessels.
  • Strong understanding of NAVSEA fabrication, inspection, and quality assurance requirements.
  • US Citizenship if required
  • The ability to acquire a DBIDS credential is required

Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate the daily work of shipfitters, helpers, and welders assigned to structural fabrication and repair tasks during second shift operations.
  • Interpret shipyard drawings, blueprints, specifications, and technical work documents.
  • Plan and assign work to meet production schedules and project milestones.
  • Lay out, align, and fit structural components including plates, frames, decks, bulkheads, brackets, and foundations.
  • Measure and mark materials to ensure proper fit and structural alignment.
  • Perform oxy-fuel cutting and material preparation for installation.
  • Grind and bevel steel components to ensure proper fit-up and weld preparation.
  • Verify proper fit-up and alignment prior to welding.
  • Coordinate work with welders, riggers, inspectors, and supervisors to maintain workflow and productivity.
  • Identify structural deficiencies or discrepancies and implement corrective actions.
  • Ensure work complies with shipyard quality standards and inspection requirements.
  • Enforce shipyard safety policies including hot work, confined space entry, and fall protection requirements.
  • Provide on-the-job training and technical guidance to shipfitters and helpers.
  • Report work progress, material needs, and production issues to the Foreman or Production Supervisor.
  • Coordinate with first shift supervision and conduct daily turnovers to ensure continuity of work, status updates, and proper transition of ongoing tasks between shifts.
  • Perform work in confined spaces, elevated work areas, and shipboard environments as required.
