About The Position

Valkyrie Enterprises has a need for a Fitter who will be a key support to welding and fitting on Naval Ships in Norfolk, Virginia. The position involves providing a variety of skilled welding of steel and aluminum plate, shapes, and pipe in the repair of or construction of vessels and associated equipment. The Fitter will fabricate templates for bending, shaping, and bracing metal structures, measure, lay-out and cut templates, and use drawings and specifications to plan welding operations, ensuring that work is in accordance with relevant codes and standards. The role also includes reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, and rough sketches, and mentoring junior welder/fitters in drawing interpretation and specific welding techniques. Compliance with OSHA, shipyard safety, and environmental policies is mandatory, and the position may require travel to jobsites away from the Shipyard.

Requirements

  • Must have a HS education or Trade School and at least 10 years of related experience.
  • Must be able to understand and interpret welding symbols IAW MIL-STD 22D.
  • Must pass weld qualifications (2G, 3G, & 4G or 6G) SMAW and GMAW processes.
  • Must meet NAVSEA 248 requirements by passing MIL-STD 1689 T9074-AR-GIB-010-278 Weld Workmanship requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous welding certification and experience with GMAW Aluminum and SMAW.
  • Previous brazing experience.
  • TIG experience.
  • FCAW experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide skilled welding on steel and aluminum plate, shapes, and pipe.
  • Fabricate templates for bending, shaping, and bracing metal structures.
  • Measure, lay-out, and cut templates.
  • Use drawings and specifications to plan welding operations.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and rough sketches.
  • Locate and mark reference lines.
  • Set-up and use portable burning/heating torches and plasma cutters.
  • Mentor junior welder/fitters in drawing interpretation and welding techniques.
  • Oversee the progression of junior welder/fitter workmanship inspectors.
  • Document fit-up, welds, and workmanship inspections.
  • Comply with OSHA and shipyard safety policies.
  • Perform Fire watch duties.
