About The Position

The Shipfitter position at Newport News Shipbuilding involves working with steel structures to fabricate and assemble components for naval ships. This role requires a minimum of three years of fitting or fabrication experience, where fitters will interpret blueprints, use various tools, and perform tasks in diverse environments, including high and confined spaces. Requirements

• Minimum of 3 years of fitting/fabrication experience.
• Ability to work at extreme heights and in confined spaces.
• Physical capability to kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb.
• Ability to lift up to 40 lbs and pass a respirator fit test.
• Must pass a Physical Agility Test.

Nice To Haves

• High school graduate or equivalent preferred.

Responsibilities

• Read and interpret blueprints to fabricate steel structures for ships.
• Use tools to measure, cut, grind, fit, align, and tack weld parts.
• Construct and install interior structures, hatches, doors, and bulkheads.
• Work in various locations including shops, dry-docks, and onboard ships.
• Attend and qualify through the shipyard's welding school.
