About The Position

The Shipfitter position at Newport News Shipbuilding involves working with steel structures to fabricate and assemble components for naval ships. This role requires a minimum of three years of fitting or fabrication experience, where fitters will interpret blueprints, use various tools, and perform tasks in diverse environments, including high and confined spaces. The position is integral to the construction and repair of U.S. Navy vessels, contributing to the safety and effectiveness of naval operations.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years of fitting/fabrication experience.
  • Ability to work at extreme heights and in confined spaces.
  • Physical capability to kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs and pass a respirator fit test.
  • Must pass a Physical Agility Test.

Nice To Haves

  • High school graduate or equivalent preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret blueprints to fabricate steel structures for ships.
  • Use tools to measure, cut, grind, fit, align, and tack weld parts.
  • Construct and install interior structures, hatches, doors, and bulkheads.
  • Work in various locations including shops, dry-docks, and onboard ships.
  • Attend and qualify through the shipyard's welding school.
