About The Position

The Shipboard Welder position at GDIT involves applying basic welding processes to join, surface, fabricate, or repair parts of metal or other weldable materials. The role requires working from blueprints, engineering sketches, charts, or work orders, and involves laying out and marking points on parts or subassemblies using various tools. The welder will position pieces to be welded into jigs and inspect completed work for conformance to specifications. Additionally, the position may involve providing guidance and leadership to less-experienced welders and participating in special projects as required. The job is located in Norfolk, VA, and requires US citizenship.

Requirements

  • High School diploma and/or a technical vocational high school diploma.
  • 2+ years of related shipboard experience.
  • Skills in blueprints, manual welding, welding machines, and welding procedures.
  • Must be a US Citizen.

Responsibilities

  • Applies basic welding processes to join, surface, fabricate, or repair parts of metal or other weldable materials.
  • Works from blueprints, engineering sketches, charts, or work orders.
  • Lays out and marks points on parts or subassemblies using rule, square, scribe, or templates.
  • Positions pieces to be welded into jigs, holding fixtures, guides, and steps using measuring instruments and hand tools.
  • Inspects completed work for conformance to specifications.
  • Provides guidance and work leadership to less-experienced welders.
  • May serve as a team leader.
  • Performs all work in accordance with established safety procedures.
  • Participates in special projects as required.
