About The Position

The Ship Rider Engineer will be responsible for supporting ship operations and repairs on the LCS 2 Independence variant during deployments and in-port periods. This role involves diagnosing system failures, troubleshooting complex operational issues, and maintaining effective communication with shipboard crews and maintenance teams. The position requires extensive travel, primarily while the ship is underway, and involves working closely with subcontractors and government personnel to ensure the operational readiness of the vessel.

Requirements

  • Licensed Marine Engineer with a minimum of five years of marine industry repair experience, preferably managing US Navy vessel repairs.
  • Equivalent experience of 15 years in maintenance management with the US Navy, Military Sealift Command, or US Merchant Marine.
  • Minimum of five years of leadership experience on complex repairs in a marine environment.
  • Thorough understanding of inspections, repairs, and testing of marine equipment.
  • Knowledge of support systems including plumbing, refrigeration, heating, and air conditioning.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of shipyard practices and operational principles of shipbuilding.
  • Ability to communicate operational status effectively and generate detailed reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and comprehend ship construction drawings and technical manuals.
  • Fundamental technical understanding of ships propulsion systems and electrical power generation.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's Degree in an Engineering discipline.
  • Experience in management or supervisory roles in shipbuilding or repair commands.
  • Experience as a Naval Supervising Authority Project Manager or US Navy Port Engineer.
  • Home Port repair/modification experience.
  • Experience with LCS Independence class ships.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose cause of system failures and report findings to the maintenance team.
  • Work directly with shipboard crews to resolve technical and operational issues.
  • Assist in managing Austal/subcontracted personnel in offsite locations.
  • Assist Ship's Force in troubleshooting HM&E system or equipment problems.
  • Make recommended adjustments to equipment settings and controls to prevent hazards.
  • Troubleshoot complex operational issues of ship systems.
  • Maintain liaison communications with the ashore Maintenance Team and LCS crew.
  • Provide data on equipment casualties and repair recommendations to the government.
  • Submit and maintain records of all repairs accomplished and equipment condition assessments.
  • Assist with routine maintenance and repairs outside the crew's capacity.
  • Conduct integrated equipment systems tests and provide technical assistance to the ship's crew.
  • Diagnose and mitigate hazardous conditions according to established procedures.
