The Ship Environmental Steward is a member of the ship's crew and is employed by the Texas A&M Maritime Academy. This role is crucial for supporting the practical training of future maritime professionals, specifically Third Mates and Third Assistant Engineers. The Ship Steward also plays a vital part in maintaining the vessel's operational readiness, ensuring it remains in ROS-5 status for potential active service outside of its training duties. The Ship Steward is a day worker in the deck department, typically working a standard eight-hour day while the ship is at sea or in port. This position is under the direct supervision of the ship's licensed officers and Boatswain. Although the role is a day-worker position, the incumbent must be available to be called out at any time for operational needs.
