About The Position

The SHIP Counselor and Volunteer Team Lead is responsible for day-to-day support and development of all SHIP staff and volunteers within a geographic region encompassing Livingston, Monroe and Washtenaw counties. Volunteer support responsibilities include the recruitment, onboarding, training, support and retention of volunteers adequate to serve Medicare beneficiaries within the assigned geographic region. This includes scheduling and management of Open Enrollment events, community outreach, and regular counseling at community venues within the assigned region. The Team Lead would also provide day-to-day management of the FUSE log ensuring that beneficiaries are connected to appointments and appropriate counseling. Duties would also include direct counseling of Medicare beneficiaries; attaining the Medicare knowledge needed to support staff, volunteers and beneficiaries; and taking lead in volunteer training and the coordination of department-wide volunteer appreciation events and efforts.

Requirements

• Associate Degree, preferred Bachelor Degree.
• Minimum 1-2 years, preferred 3-5 years experience in Health/Human Service, Social Services or Health Admin non-profit setting.
• In addition, 3 - 5, volunteer management, and outreach support.
• Must complete SHIP counseling certification within 6 months of hire.
• Knowledge of Medicare and long-term care Medicaid, volunteer management, and experience working with older adults and adults with disabilities.
• Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication, organizational, presentation, creative thinker, self-starter, relationship building, analytical/problem solving skills.
• Effective time management skills including the ability to meet deadlines.
• Intermediate Microsoft Office skills.

Responsibilities

• Maintain ongoing recruitment, onboarding, oversight and training of volunteers in assigned geographic region.
• Provide support for volunteers who have counseling questions and concerns, conduct annual volunteer evaluations, facilitate annual recertification process for assigned volunteers.
• Arrange and manage open enrollment schedule and events in assigned region, seek and manage opportunities for regularly occurring counseling at community venues within assigned region, and seek out and coordinate community outreach opportunities in that region.
• Take lead in coordination of department volunteer training events and volunteer appreciation events.
• Provide unbiased person-centered Medicare counseling to Medicare beneficiaries or their family members seeking information and guidance on Medicare coverage options and other questions.
• Maintain quality assurance with a focus on utilizing effective counseling techniques and inputting accurate and complete documentation in STARS database.
• Provide day-to-day lead support of SHIP staff including SHIP Volunteer Specialists and SHIP Administrative Assistant positions.
• Support staff by answering questions and resolving barriers regarding SHIP processes and procedures and serving as a resource for complex cases.
• Monitor the FUSE log regularly to ensure that beneficiaries are being provided with timely connection with appropriate counseling.
• Lead training efforts to meet the needs of staff and volunteers, including developing key volunteer trainings such as the annual “What’s New in Medicare” trainings and volunteer recertification trainings.
• Take lead in planning/coordination of annual volunteer appreciation event.
• Attend required trainings to maintain current knowledge of the Medicare program.
