About The Position

The Shift Supervisor manages employees on a paper machine to ensure the safe and efficient manufacturing of 100% recycled containerboard. This role involves carrying out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws, including interviewing, hiring, training, planning, assigning, and directing work, as well as rewarding, disciplining employees, addressing complaints, and resolving problems. The supervisor is expected to lead by example, mentor, and exhibit behaviors consistent with the company’s values. They may also provide recommendations regarding staff recruitment, selection, promotion, advancement, corrective action, and termination, and may prepare and/or deliver performance appraisals.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of 100% recycled containerboard experience.
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Ability to work a 12-hour, rotating shift schedule.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Suite.
  • Ability to learn new applications.
  • Strong understanding of computerized maintenance management systems such as Maximo.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong mechanical knowledge and aptitude.
  • Well-developed ability to build lasting relationships.
  • Ability to provide recognition.
  • Ability to demonstrate integrity and high personal standards.
  • Solid understanding of the operation of 100% recycled containerboard.
  • Ability to communicate effectively through oral and written communication to individuals and groups of diverse sizes.
  • Ability to act appropriately in emergency situations.

Responsibilities

  • Manage employees on a paper machine to ensure safe and efficient manufacturing of 100% recycled containerboard.
  • Directly supervise 13 non-exempt Mill Technicians/Operators.
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
  • Interview, hire, and train employees.
  • Plan, assign, and direct work.
  • Reward and discipline employees.
  • Address complaints and resolve problems.
  • Lead by example, mentoring, and exhibiting behaviors that are consistent with the company’s values.
  • May provide recommendations regarding staff recruitment, selection, promotion, advancement, corrective action, and termination.
  • May prepare and/or deliver performance appraisal for staff.
  • Manage Mill Technicians/Operators to ensure accurate time management, scheduling, training, and meeting KPI’s including mill goals, production, quality, and on-grade up-time.
  • Ensure compliance with all HR policies, SOP’s, and collective bargaining agreement.
  • Ensure safety and environmental compliance through training, meetings, and enforcement of safety and environmental policies.
  • Responsible for new employee orientation, training, and daily toolbox talks.
  • Work with crew members and maintenance team to perform root cause failure analysis (RCFA) for paper breaks and mechanical failure.
  • Assess individual training needs and plan training.
  • Work with the Paper Machine Superintendent to plan and execute mill maintenance shutdowns.
  • Maintain equipment through assuring basic care rounds, operator maintenance, housekeeping, and effective use of maintenance resources are completed.
  • Champion continuous improvement processes and equipment reliability.
  • Communicate among crew members, other shift supervisors, and management through shift turnover and daily reporting.
  • Work with crew members to resolve issues or complaints; communicate concerns with the Paper Machine Superintendent and Human Resources Manager if necessary.
  • Perform other functions that may be assigned.
