At Stony Brook Medicine, A TH Clinical Laboratory Technologist I is a valuable member of our team. The Incumbent must demonstrate the highest degree of technical competence and theoretical knowledge applicable to a comprehensive tertiary care blood bank and transfusion service. The employee filling this position will be charged with the responsibility of Shift Supervisor in the Blood Bank . Under the direction of the Blood Bank Associate Technical Director, the TH Clinical Laboratory Technologist I will supervise the TH Clinical Laboratory Technologist IVs, IIIs and IIs, as well as coordinate and provide support for the Blood Bank TH Clinical Laboratory Technologist Is with specific shift specific responsibilities. He/She is the technical resource for the Blood Bank. He/She performs normal supervisor duties, such as work assignments and scheduling, as needed (in the absence of the Shift Lead Tech) and stands in for the TH Associate Technical Director (in his/her absence). Qualified candidates will demonstrate the highest level of Blood Banking knowledge, superior communication skills and BBLIS knowledge while adhering to our high standard of excellence. This position is critical to the overall operation of the Blood Bank and significantly influences the department's ability to effectively support critical hospital services such as the ED, OR and ICUs as well as IT, Clinical Informatics and Quality Assurance functions. The responsibilities of the TH Clinical Laboratory Technologist I include: technical and administrative direction of the Blood Bank with an emphasis on the Blood Bank Laboratory Information System WellSky Transfusion and its integration into the SBUH Electronic Medical Record (EMR), Blood Bank liaison to other hospital departments, continuation of quality assurance efforts, and serves as a technical, administrative, educational, policy and procedure resource for the Blood Bank. Duties of a TH Clin Lab Tech I may include the following but are not limited to: Monitoring and maintaining the functionality of the Blood Bank Laboratory Information System WellSky Transfusion to conform to the changing operational and regulatory requirements of the department. Inclusive of database changes, test development and modification, and issues with and enhancements to interfaces and the SBUH Electronic Medical Record (EMR), in accordance with applicable FDA, NYSDOH, AABB, CAP requirements and other relevant regulatory agencies requirements. Assists all areas of the hospital in the interface of the Blood Bank Laboratory Information System WellSky Transfusion with the SBUH EMR to access such screens as order entry and result review. Assists in the development and implementation of new screens and procedures Auditing and analysis of the Blood Bank Laboratory Information System patient billing. Acts as a liaison with Patient Accounting, Hospital IT etc for problem resolution. Makes any necessary credits and/or debits to patient accounts. Managing and ordering laboratory supplies and reagents. Reviewing and adjusting standing and blanket orders. Reviewing and approving invoices for payment. Researches, investigates, distributes and responds to blood and blood product recall notifications. Preparing staff evaluations and performance programs, as necessary. Completing and maintaining Blood Bank statistical reports. In the absence of the Associate Technical Director, responding to time-sensitive critical requests and communicating with other hospital departments as necessary. Is responsible collectively and individually for accurate filing and record keeping. Assists in training new staff members, particularly other TH Clin Lab Tech Is Maintain and oversee the BB Quality Program as it pertains to his/her role. Assures that the process of providing blood/blood products to the OR/Perioperative services is effective and efficient. Oversees the inventory process for Blood Bank supplies and reagents. Coordinates inventory management of Blood and Blood products with the BB staff and the Blood Suppliers. Ensures that all Blood Bank protocols and procedures are adhered to Has the responsibility to interpret Blood Bank protocols and procedures as needed, always considering patient safety as the first priority. Will make decisions, in extreme emergency situations, which are necessary to preserve the life of a patient in the event that time does not permit consultation with the Blood Bank Associate Technical Director and/or Chief, Blood Services. Makes recommendations on reagent purchases, reagent problems, new methodologies and the need or lack of need to institute these methodologies. Coordination of review of the department's exception report, including initiation of corrective action and notification procedures Provides supervision during the absence of the shift assigned Lead Tech. Inclusive of work assignments and scheduling as needed. Maintains a general knowledge of safe laboratory practices, as endorsed by the NYSDOH, and conducts oneself in a manner consistent with those practices. This includes using appropriate engineering and administrative controls and/or wearing the appropriate PPE. Assures that all departmental staff abide by these safety protocols. Reviews, learns and understands all applicable CAP, AABB, FDA, NYSDOH, JCAHO etc. standards and regulations. Prepares the Blood Bank laboratory for evaluations, inspections and accreditations. Undergoes specialized training on complex automated laboratory instrumentation inclusive of: Theory of function Mechanics of operation Operational maintenance Trouble-shooting Emergency repair procedures Training staff upon completion Will become familiar with and abide by acceptable time and attendance practices. Will ensure that all departmental staff abide by acceptable time and attendance practices. Identify, document, communicate and initiate corrective action of deviations from department policies and procedures.
