About The Position

The Shift Shipping Loader is responsible for lifting, moving, and positioning heavy steel joists in preparation for shipping. This role requires operational knowledge of equipment in a shipping yard, particularly the use of high-capacity, pneumatic, heavy-duty forklifts. The position emphasizes safety, effective communication, and teamwork in a fast-paced environment.

Requirements

• Full operational knowledge of primary equipment in a shipping yard, especially heavy-duty forklifts.
• Ability to observe and determine the safety of load hookups.
• Experience in manipulating forklift vehicle controls for material movement.
• Knowledge of using hoisting attachments for load management.
• Ability to perform daily safety checks and inspect vehicles for defects.

Responsibilities

• Lift, move, and position loads of long, heavy steel joists for shipping.
• Operate high-capacity, pneumatic, heavy-duty forklifts safely and efficiently.
• Observe load hookup and assess the safety of loads before moving them.
• Manipulate forklift controls to regulate speed, direction, and movement of materials.
• Use hoisting attachments such as hooks, slings, or buckets as required for loads.
• Perform daily safety checks and inspect vehicles for defects, reporting any issues to the supervisor.
• Build and band loads for shipment and tag them appropriately.
• Maintain a positive work environment through effective communication with customers, contractors, coworkers, and supervisors.
• Perform all assigned tasks safely.
