About The Position

The Shift Captain is the front-line supervisor for his/her shift. The Shift Captain serves as the primary point of contact for field-level personnel on his/her shift. The Shift Captain is responsible for all the duties of an EMT/Paramedic outlined in Amerimed EMS SOP and all duties and responsibilities outlined below. The Shift Captain works closely with the Division Manager to communicate all aspects of daily EMS Operations on their given shift.

  • Must hold a valid State EMS License at the EMT, EMT-I, AEMT, or Paramedic level (Paramedic Preferred).
  • Must possess a valid Driver's License and have a good driving record.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous supervisory or management experience preferred, but not mandatory.
  • 2-3 years of EMS experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting the Division Manager with ensuring all staff are in compliance with all company Standard Operating Procedures and As It Should Be (AISB) standards at all times.
  • Coordinating the scheduling of emergency medical systems personnel and operations.
  • Assisting the Division Manager with the onboarding of new field associates. The Shift Captain’s primary role during onboarding is to function as a Field Training Officer (FTO) to host new associates during their third rides.
  • Alerting the Division Manager of any associate certifications in need of renewal to maintain compliance with company and industry standards.
  • Handling employee issues/behaviors and issuing corrective action as needed (with prior approval of Division Manager). If corrective action goes beyond verbal warning, the Shift Captain should escalate the issue to the appropriate Division Manager for issuance.
  • Providing documentation to the Division Manager to assist with annual performance evaluations for field staff.
  • Demonstrating the ability to write and verbalize goals, objectives, and document outcomes pertaining to operational directives given by the Division Manager.
  • Delivering written and oral communication, responding to questions and concerns from field personnel, and producing specific outcomes.
  • Communicating regularly with other Shift Captains and the Division Manager to ensure consistency of daily operations.
  • Monitoring all transport activities within your division. This includes monitoring radio traffic, CAD activity, and maintaining awareness of resources from neighboring divisions to ensure the most efficient deployment of resources and response to requests for transport.
  • Assisting Medcomm in the setting up of Intercepts to ensure operational efficiency and timing. The Shift Captain should alert the Division Manager of any call involving their own unit to remove themselves from any perception of favoritism or avoidance of calls.
  • Reconciling all paperwork for patients transported daily within your respective division. Updating the recon log daily to reflect corrections, rejections, or paperwork issues. Communicating with crew members who need remedial training on proper Patient Care Report documentation.
  • Reviewing Daily Rig Checks to ensure compliance. The Shift Captain should alert the Division Manager of any deficiencies and assist with a plan to correct them.
  • Documenting Non-Productive time, with reasoning, for the Division Manger to review.
  • Ensuring daily scheduling needs are documented properly. Document all Sick, PTO, Bereavement, or other scheduling needs. Focus on Full-time scheduling using Part time used to supplement as needed. Review, approve, or deny time-off requests.
  • Individuals should attend training classes to maintain national certification, state licensure, trade, and education conferences, and keep abreast of new developments in the field, or maintain existing knowledge.
