About the position

The Sheriff Jail Clerk plays a crucial role in the Muskegon County Jail by performing various clerical activities under the supervision of the Jail Administrator. This position involves managing inmate visitation, operating the Law Enforcement Information Network (LEIN) terminal, and ensuring the efficient handling of sensitive documents. The role requires strong judgment and the ability to work under time constraints while adhering to departmental procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Receive visitors for public and professional inmate visitation and direct them to the appropriate visitation site.
  • Monitor the jail video visitation system and answer all incoming calls.
  • Operate the Law Enforcement Information Network (LEIN) terminal for data entry.
  • Assist various law enforcement agencies in supplying and receiving information.
  • Handle sensitive documents such as bench warrants, arrest warrants, and court orders with care and confidentiality.
  • Exercise judgment and knowledge obtained on the job, referring technical matters to supervisors.

Requirements

  • Experience in clerical work, preferably in a law enforcement or correctional setting.
  • Knowledge of office procedures and practices.
  • Ability to operate computer systems and data entry terminals, specifically LEIN.
  • Strong communication skills to interact with the public and law enforcement personnel.
  • Ability to work under time constraints and manage sensitive information.
