About The Position

The Shelter Veterinary Assistant provides essential support to the veterinary team in delivering high-quality medical care to shelter animals. This role ensures the health, welfare, and comfort of all animals through hands-on assistance, thorough observation, accurate documentation, and compassionate care in a fast-paced shelter environment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; completion of a veterinary assistant training program preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience assisting a veterinarian in a veterinary clinic, animal shelter, or animal care setting required.
  • Working knowledge of animal health, behavior, and welfare.
  • Ability to handle animals safely, calmly, and compassionately.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accurate documentation.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians with medical procedures, including examinations, vaccinations, treatments, spay/neuter surgeries, and emergency surgeries as needed.
  • Perform daily rounds to evaluate the overall health and well-being of animals throughout the shelter.
  • Assist with animal intake, including initial health assessments, vaccinations, and documentation.
  • Maintain inventory of chronic medical cases and communicate changes in medical condition to the veterinarian as appropriate.
  • Act as a liaison between the veterinarian and other departments regarding ongoing medical, surgical, behavior, and/or foster needs.
  • Prepare and maintain medical supplies, instruments, and treatment areas, ensuring proper sanitation and organization.
  • Monitor and care for recovering animals, including administering medications and observing recovery progress.
  • Proficiency in clinical tasks such as IV catheter placement, blood draws, patient monitoring under anesthesia, surgery prep, vaccine administration, and x-ray
  • Provide support during spay/neuter clinics and other special medical programs.
  • Ensure compliance with shelter protocols, safety standards, and applicable state and federal regulations.
  • Educate shelter staff and volunteers on proper animal handling, medication administration, and basic health practices.
  • Support overall shelter operations, including cleaning and disinfecting kennels, treatment areas, and equipment.
