About The Position

The Shelter Support Staff position at The Salvation Army Northwest Division involves providing essential support and services to individuals in need at the SoDo shelter in Seattle. This role focuses on ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for residents, conducting client intakes, and responding to emergencies while working closely with the King County Shelter Program team. The position requires compassion, effective communication, and the ability to handle crisis situations.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of 6 months experience in public contact/customer service.
  • Experience in social service shelter/residential preferred.
  • WA Driver's License preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to crisis and inquiry telephone calls by providing support, information, and referrals to other appropriate social services.
  • Provide assistance to residents to ensure a safe environment, including compliance with rules.
  • Conduct periodic walking inspections of all areas of the facility to identify and initiate appropriate action regarding hazards or inappropriate behavior.
  • Respond to emergency situations, making independent decisions within policy guidelines.
  • Provide crisis intervention and institute security procedures during critical situations.
  • Conduct client intakes and departure processes as required by department policy.
  • Provide orientation, support, and supervision to residents.
  • Assist with the orientation and training of new staff and volunteers.
  • Work cooperatively with other Salvation Army staff and represent programs to community agencies positively.
  • Participate in staff meetings and maintain case records and required forms and reports.
  • Comply with Salvation Army procedural requirements, including those in the Policy & Procedure Manual and Employee Handbook.
  • Prepare water, coffee, and snacks for guests as needed.
  • Perform general cleaning of facility bathrooms, sleeping areas, and common areas as assigned.
