About The Position

The Shelter Stabilization Worker at Bay Cove Human Services plays a crucial role in providing day-to-day support and skills training to individuals residing in a dual-diagnosis emergency shelter. This position is focused on assisting guests in achieving their housing goals through a strengths-based, person-centered, trauma-informed approach. The worker engages with guests to foster a safe and respectful community while addressing their unique needs related to mental health and substance use disorders.

Requirements

  • One year of direct care experience providing services to adults with mental illness or related populations; a BA/BS can substitute for experience.
  • Department of Public Health certification in medication administration required within 60 days.
  • Proficiency in word processing and basic computer functions.
  • Demonstrated professional communication and organizational skills.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends on a scheduled or as-needed basis.

Responsibilities

  • Engages in relationship building with shelter guests, focusing on the long-term homeless population with concurrent mental health and substance use issues.
  • Engages guests in conversations about housing goals and the steps needed to achieve them.
  • Teaches and role-models skills in grooming, hygiene, housekeeping, communication/social skills, and recreational activities.
  • Administers medications according to MAP standards and trains guests in self-administration procedures.
  • Implements safety procedures and crisis intervention practices using a non-judgmental, harm-reduction approach.
  • Provides supportive counseling to guests regarding daily personal and social issues.
  • Maintains documentation as per site expectations.
  • Prepares and serves meals in accordance with 509 regulations.
  • Participates in cleaning the shelter and encourages guests to maintain a clean living environment.
  • Monitors guests' health needs and consults with the program nurse or on-call nurse consultant when necessary.
  • Completes other duties and projects as assigned by the supervisor.
