About The Position

The Shelter Advocate is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of individuals receiving shelter, particularly survivors of domestic violence and their children. This role involves direct interaction with residents, enforcing policies, providing crisis intervention, and maintaining a supportive environment. The position requires strong customer service skills and the ability to handle multiple demands while maintaining confidentiality and a genuine concern for the well-being of the residents.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED preferred, but not required.
  • Yearly certification in first aid, CPR, and a Food Handler's card is required.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Ability to complete tasks in a timely manner and prioritize multiple requests.
  • High level of problem-solving skills and patience.
  • Genuine concern for survivors of domestic violence.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and privacy.

  • Knowledge of domestic violence issues and resources.

Responsibilities

  • Interact directly with domestic violence survivors and their children living in shelter.
  • Maintain ongoing professional relationships in all interpersonal contacts, ensuring confidentiality.
  • Answer multi-line telephones and appropriately deal with visitors to the facility.
  • Provide information, referrals, crisis intervention, and support to incoming contacts.
  • Receive and route inquiries and messages, inter-office notes, and program materials as appropriate.
  • Assist in maintaining client files by logging appropriate information and incidents occurring during the shift.
  • Maintain front desk materials in an appropriate manner.
  • Coordinate with co-workers to perform security and fire watches throughout the building.
  • Responsible for meal preparation as needed, requiring a food handler's card.
  • Perform light cleaning duties and room preparation with co-workers.
  • Receive, log, receipt, sort, and store incoming donations and fees appropriately.
  • Familiarize and enforce neighborhood agreements, zoning constraints, and funding contracts related to the program and its rules/policies.
  • Attend all assigned staff meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
