About The Position

Performs a variety of semi-skilled duties and assists in various technical fieldwork tasks associated with the shellfish program. This is a senior shellfish technician and/or natural resources worker and will be, at times, an in-field supervisor to Shellfish Technical Specialist 1 employees. This level is considered to be an experienced journey-level technician.

Requirements

  • Associate of Arts Degree and one year of natural resources or related experience; OR High School Diploma/GED and three years of natural resources or related experience. Course work in fisheries, biology or related fields may substitute for experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Washington State Driver’s License
  • PADI certified (Basic and Advanced)

Nice To Haves

  • SCUBA Certification is not required but is desirable

Responsibilities

  • Monitors tribal commercial shellfish harvests.
  • Participates in clam enhancement activities including predator net installation and maintenance, graveling, seeding, and ground maintenance.
  • Collects data for intertidal clam and geoduck population surveys.
  • Operates (day and/or night hours, year round) and maintains departmental boats used in a variety of shellfish program activities.
  • Assist in diving operations including geoduck sample collections and geoduck population surveys.
  • Supervises Shellfish Technical Specialist 1 employees in the field when Biologist is not present.
  • Performs clam surveys, data entry, and analysis.
  • Assures organization, inventory, and security of all departmental equipment, tools, and supplies.
  • Performs any natural resources related work as required by the programs of the department.
