About The Position

The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) is the second largest municipal health system in the nation. DEFINITION: Performs journey-level sheet metal installation, fabrication, assembly and repair work.Lays out, cuts, shapes and constructs articles of sheet metal, including black and galvanized iron and steel, tin, copper, brass, zinc, and stainless steel. Supervises apprentices and helpers. Punches or drills holes for rivets, bolts or metal screws. Grinds and files seams, joints and rough surfaces; burrs and turns edges. Fabricates or repairs such sheet metal articles as roofing, gutters, flashing, louvers, ventilators, ducts, hoods, sinks, steam tables, trays, lockers, shelves, fire doors and metal windows. Transfers patterns from blueprints to metal, using scale, compass, divider, prick punch and other layout tools. Fabricates signs, ducts, vessels, etc., from plastics. Solders, welds and brazes. Drives automotive equipment to and from work sites in order to transport the necessary tools, equipment, and materials required to perform the job. Maintains tools and equipment.

Requirements

  • Option I: Completion of a recognized apprenticeship training program in sheet metal work of at least four (4) years duration.
  • Option II: Five (5) years of experience in sheet metal work in the building trades, one (1) year of which must have been at the journey-level.
  • Journey-level experience applies to a person who has completed an apprenticeship program or is an experienced worker, not a trainee, and is fully qualified and able to perform a specific trade without supervision.
  • A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions
  • Applicants for driving positions must submit a clear driver's license copy and their driving record from the CA DMV before final appointment.
  • PHYSICAL CLASS III - MODERATE: This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.
  • Recognized is defined as an approved agency including but not limited to agencies such as the International Training Institute for the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Industry. Applicants who expect to qualify under Option I, must include a legible photocopy of their apprenticeship training certificate.
