About The Position

This position works under general direction and requires thorough knowledge of and skill in sheet metal trade • Serve as lead worker (e.g., provides work direction and training) to lower-level sheet metal workers, other trades helpers, and/or incarcerated persons in fabricating sheet metal and/or structured steel/heavy metal • Participate in repairing roofs, gutters, downspouts and flashings • Fabricates metal products (e.g., pans, ductwork, kitchen equipment, cans, boxes, tanks) and inspects completed work • Welds metal and installs metal security fixtures, electrical appliances and furniture • Designs/redesigns, fabricates, modifies, installs and repairs more complex sheet metal and/or structures, steel/heavy metal parts, components, items and assemblies (e.g., security and storage areas, fire escapes, cell doors, grates, security gates, bars, cell beds) • Plans and evaluates jobs • Estimates time • Lays out patterns and cuts, bends, welds, burns and fabricates various metal parts. • Determines and completes materials needed, cost estimates, and submit requests to purchase • Reads blueprints and/or schematic diagrams • Maintains tool count of tools used by incarcerated persons (e.g., completes tool control forms daily, maintains strict inventory of tools) • Maintains and cleans equipment and tools • Prepares and maintains required records and reports (e.g., broken tool, shop security, work completed daily, incarcerated persons evaluations) manually and/or electronically using personal computer and office systems software • Performs other maintenance and/or miscellaneous duties (e.g., performs semi-skilled carpentry, painting, plumbing and/or water treatment, electrical, HVAC) • Maintains inventory of supplies • Ensures compliance with security regulations. • Operates snow and ice removal and grass cutting equipment • Operates heavy equipment (e.g., backhoe, trencher, forklift) • Serves on institutional committees • Attends training, seminars and/or meetings as required • Performs security functions as required (e.g., man down, shakedown, inmate movement) • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • 18 mos. trg. or 18 mos. verifiable exp.in sheet metal work under supervision of experienced sheet metal worker
  • formal education in arithmetic that includes fractions & percentages & in reading & writing common English vocabulary.
  • Or 6 mos. exp. as Sheet Metal Worker 1, 52271.
  • Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above.
