The selected Sheet Metal Mechanic Deck Lead candidate will support the PM Ventilation Modernization Team, working closely with our skilled trades teams, on active class surface ships using various processes, mechanical techniques and related tools to remove, install, and upgrade industrial equipment, assisting with alterations and installations for fleet modernization on various contracts. Weekend and/or overtime hours may be required depending on contract awards and support required as per trade/skill set. Selected candidates will be required to commute to and maintain access to shipyards and military bases located around the Hampton Roads area depending on contract obligations. Selected candidates may be required to travel to shipyards and military bases located around the country and abroad when not assigned to a local task. Per Diem provided based on location when on travel. Travel and lodging expenses are covered by the company.

Requirements

  • Must have High School education or Trade School or equivalent, and 6 years of related experience. Prefer technical/professional certifications.
  • Must have experience working on a US Naval Vessels.
  • Must be able to obtain medical clearance to wear a half-face respirator.
  • Must have experience using various measuring devices accurately including but not limited to, rulers (down to 1/16”), protractors, angle finders, and compasses.
  • Must have working knowledge and experience with removing, redesigning, modifying, assembling shipboard ventilation systems, ductwork, support structure and insulation.
  • Must have working knowledge of reading and interpreting drawings, blueprints, schematics, technical manuals, engineering sketches, charts and/or work orders as well as written and verbal instruction for products to be modified, fabricated and installed.
  • Must be able to compose red line drawings with accurate dimensions and descriptions of ventilation materials, support pieces and hardware required for ductwork modification to the management and fabrication teams.
  • Must be able to work outside of trade specific requirements as team projects require, assisting team members towards task completion.
  • Must have knowledge of quality control steps and procedures. Must be able to follow and enforce safety procedures.
  • Must have experience working in a team environment and be able to interface and communicate effectively with others and provide guidance and instruction to team members.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance and maintain clearance level throughout employment.
  • Must be able to obtain shipyard access credentials within 7 days of start date and maintain credentials throughout employment.
  • Must be able to travel between 25% and 50% when not assigned to local tasking.
  • Must provide hand tools and trade specific PPE per trades designation.

Nice To Haves

  • Candidates who are currently enrolled or have graduated from and/or completed a vocational school or skilled trades certificate program are preferred.
  • Current Shipyard Competent Person Certification preferred.
  • Current OSHA 10 Maritime Certificate a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Support trades team by working on active class surface ships to lead and implement alterations and installations for fleet modernization.
  • Perform all work in accordance with established quality and safety procedures.
  • Perform a variety of simple and complicated tasks, both routine and non-routine, including those outside of specialty, related to shipboard maintenance to meet standards on various contracts at company, customer and/or field locations.
  • Apply expert understanding of production and processes, specialty trades functions and tools to provide technical support, install, operate, maintain, repair, and modify shipboard ventilation, support structure, systems, integrated systems and related equipment at company, customer and/or field locations.
  • Work from blueprints, engineering sketches, charts, or work orders.
  • Lead a small team responsible for removing, modifying, and reinstalling various ventilation and ducting systems aboard naval vessels.
  • Cut, fit, assemble, bend, and position sheet metal, ductwork, ventilation, and support structures to be attached or welded into jigs, holding fixtures, and existing structure using hand and powered tools.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose malfunctions to eliminate problems in minimum time.
  • Participate in special projects as required.
  • Develop and use technical documents including controlled work packages, formal work processes and procedures, test documents, reports and task or trip reports.
  • Inspect completed work for conformance to specifications.
  • Provide guidance and work leadership to the team. Maintain effective customer communications and relations.
  • Provide status reports, modification recommendations, and material needs to the management team.
