About The Position

The Sheepherder position involves managing and caring for sheep and/or goat flocks on range or pasture. The role requires herding, grazing management, and ensuring the health and safety of the animals. The Sheepherder will work primarily outdoors, utilizing horseback riding, ATVs, and footwork to tend to the flock, while also performing seasonal duties related to lambing and animal health management.

Requirements

  • Must have 3 months of experience with 800 - 1000 head flocks.
  • Ability to ride horseback and operate ATVs for herding.
  • Knowledge of animal husbandry and flock management.
  • Experience in identifying signs of illness in sheep and goats.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks related to herding and animal care.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with lambing and animal birthing processes.
  • Knowledge of rangeland ecology and management practices.

Responsibilities

  • Herd and manage sheep and/or goat flocks on range or pasture.
  • Round up strays using trained dogs.
  • Attend to grazing needs of the flock, including herding and bedding down near campsites.
  • Guard the flock from predatory animals and poisonous plants.
  • Administer vaccines, medications, and insecticides as needed.
  • Maintain knowledge of rangeland to prevent overgrazing and manage vegetation.
  • Assist in lambing, docking, and shearing as required.
  • Move pregnant ewes to lambing grounds and assist during labor.
  • Identify and address herd health issues, including malnutrition and illness.
  • Provide water and minor maintenance for water troughs and lines.
  • Disperse livestock to reduce overcrowding and promote bonding between mothers and lambs.
  • Protect vulnerable livestock from predators and assist in branding, castrating, vaccinating, tagging, and worming lambs.
