About The Position

The Manager of Restoration and Land Stewardship at Shaw Nature Reserve provides leadership and strategic vision for the SNR Ecological Restoration Program. This role involves direct oversight and personal contribution to ecological restoration and land management activities, including invasive species control, native species seed collection, and prescribed fire. The manager will guide, train, and supervise restoration staff and lead the SNR Volunteer Land Stewardship program, ensuring that the ecological restoration program is science-driven and adheres to best practices. The position also involves fostering relationships with donors, foundations, and strategic partners to support the Ecological Restoration Program and effectively communicating restoration objectives across various staff and divisions.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5-7 years related experience with ecological restoration and land management.
  • Knowledge of regional native and invasive plant species.
  • Understanding of ecological concepts related to Missouri's natural communities.
  • Ability to operate a wide range of machinery safely.
  • Experience with preparation of firebreaks and execution of prescribed fires.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in botany, biology, forestry or related area.
  • Prior NWCG Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2) or Type 1 (FFT1) certification experience.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and mentor a team of restoration staff and volunteers.
  • Develop, manage, and execute strategies for invasive species management and native seed collection.
  • Manage the SNR prescribed fire program and monitor prescribed fire objectives.
  • Lead and supervise the Volunteer Land Steward program.
  • Train and supervise restoration technicians, seasonal interns, and volunteers.
  • Manage and coordinate all restoration-related contractor activities.
  • Serve as point of contact for agriculture tenants leasing SNR working lands.
  • Maintain current knowledge of restoration science and best management practices.
  • Identify funding opportunities and prepare grant proposals.
  • Collaborate with various partners to facilitate ecological research.
  • Evaluate SNR natural communities and assess land management concerns.
  • Maintain and update management plans for restoration strategies.
  • Ensure execution of seasonal restoration activities.
  • Ensure restoration staff have appropriate certifications and training.
  • Collaborate with management to develop necessary infrastructure and equipment.
  • Record restoration activities in the Restoration Web App geospatial database.
  • Adhere to established policies and procedures.
  • Promote a culture of teamwork and cooperation.
