About The Position

The SFGATE Contributing Parks Editor for the Pacific Northwest is a part-time role focused on delivering impactful journalism about the region's national parks. The editor will work under the National Parks Bureau Chief, producing a mix of timely news stories and in-depth features that resonate with both locals and visitors. This position requires a strong understanding of the Pacific Northwest's national parks and the ability to generate engaging content that goes beyond typical travel narratives.

Requirements

• 3 to 4 years of relevant experience in writing and/or editing at a publication or digital media environment.
• Deep knowledge of the Pacific Northwest's national parks, including Mount Rainier, North Cascades, Olympic, Crater Lake, and Pacific Rim.
• Strong writing skills and a passion for journalism and storytelling.
• Familiarity with SFGATE's brand and voice.

Responsibilities

• Generate and pitch story ideas related to the Pacific Northwest's national parks.
• Write two features per week on average, ensuring high-quality content that engages the audience.
• Toggle between fast-paced news stories and well-researched features during significant events.
• Maintain an editorial calendar and meet deadlines while working autonomously in a remote setting.
• Communicate effectively with the copy and photo desks in San Francisco.
• Leverage a strong network within the community to source stories and insights.
