Administration of Environmental Quality Programs

The Recreation department is introducing new changes to this year's WORKREATION program, which will begin in June 2025. After August 2025, there may be an opportunity to continue employment into the academic school year. This position is a temporary exempt, as-needed appointment, and is seasonal, meaning it will not result in an eligible list for a permanent civil service position. Employees serve at the will of the Appointing Officer. The program has been running for 65 years, providing local young people the chance to gain valuable work experience, learn responsibility and professionalism, and develop job skills. Assignments will take place in various neighborhood parks and recreation centers, involving activities such as arts and crafts, sports, cooking, gardening, and facility support. The basic work week schedule is Monday through Friday or Tuesday through Saturday, with up to 20 hours weekly, and may include evenings and weekends.

  • Assist in summer recreation activities including sports, arts & crafts, cooking, field trips, and special events as a Day Camp Assistant.
  • Prepare facilities for events, monitor facility usage, and interact with the public as a Facility Assistant.
  • Help maintain parks by assisting gardeners with planting and weeding as a Green Assistant.
  • Monitor pool activities, assist with setup and breakdown for events, and interact with the public as a Pool Assistant.
  • Must be a San Francisco resident and currently attending high school in San Francisco during the academic year 2024-2025.
  • Must be 14 years or older and under 18 years of age as of June 2025.
  • Must possess a Social Security Card, valid picture identification, and documents establishing identity and employment eligibility.
  • Experience in leadership or volunteer work.
  • Participation in organized art or sport activities.
  • Bilingual skills, including American Sign Language (ASL).
  • Strong verbal communication skills and ability to write well.
  • Experience working in ethnically and socially diverse communities.
  • Compensation of $25.00 per hour.
