About The Position

General Purpose: Performs a variety of entry level skilled duties related to the maintenance and repair of city sewer collection system. Supervision Received: Works under general supervision of the Street & Sewer Supervisor, Sewer System Operator III or II while in training or on a project-by-project basis. Supervision Exercised: None Essential Functions: Sewer: Performs sewer collection system installation, maintenance, and repairs; operates a variety of hand or power equipment, including tapping machine, jackhammer, compactor, rodding machine, etc.; performs maintenance on irrigation system; cleans and services ditches to assure quality water flow; performs seasonal burning; clears grates from obstructions; constructs or improves channels. Maintains and cleans city sewer collection system main lines; inspects sewer lines to detect leaks or malfunctions; bolts leak proof collars to mains to stop leaks; seals joints with cementing compound; opens clogged sewer lines using various pipe cleaning equipment; line cleaning and flushing; operates and maintains high pressure heavy line-cleaning equipment; may enter manholes to remove obstructions. Conducts manhole surveys to check for damaged lids and rings; operates a variety of hand and power tools and equipment as needed to maintain and repair manholes, etc.; replaces or resets grade rings as needed to bring manholes up to road grade; may perform as a safety flagman during highway operations. Travels city collection system routes to monitor line condition; observes system flow, takes flow meter readings and removes debris and obstructions to prevent line back-ups and property damage; Monitors work performed by contract line installation, maintenance and repair companies; assists contractors to identify and locate lines. Observes connection operations to assure compliance with established methods and procedures; may issue stop-work orders based upon compliance; monitors collection line system to prevent illegal or unauthorized connections, tampering or dumping and initiates corrective action according to established policies and procedures. Inspects sewer lateral connections to assure compliance with Utah Plumbing Code; issues stop-work orders for nonconforming connections; monitors collection system to prevent illegal or unauthorized connections, tampering or dumping and initiates corrective action according to established policies and procedures. Oversees and performs the operation and maintenance of televising equipment; assures proper monitoring operations and schedules are adhered to; provides training in television equipment operation and maintenance; maintains various cleaning records and TV logs; submits regular reports and apprises supervisor of needed maintenance based upon TV results. Performs cleaning and inspection of sewer mains and may enter manholes to clear obstructions. Performs related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school
  • One (1) year of experience performing above and related duties; OR An equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Some knowledge of collection system network, line and manhole locations
  • Hazards and precautions associated with trench work and sewer line construction
  • Sewer cleaning and televising equipment
  • Safety standards related to sewer line maintenance
  • Hazards common to heavy equipment operation
  • Equipment maintenance and repair
  • Skill in the operation of heavy mechanized equipment as required by the position
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment of various kinds under varying conditions
  • Make minor repairs on assigned vehicles
  • Perform heavy physical labor
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Work from blueprints
  • Tolerate weather extremes in the work environment
  • Must become a Utah State Waste Water Collection System Operator Certification level I within two test cycles.
  • Must possess a Commercial Drivers License (CDL).
  • May be required to become HAZMAT certified.
  • Must obtain Flagman Traffic Control Certification.
  • Must be able to lift 50-75 pounds.
  • Must be willing to work on-call duty and 24 hour standby.
