About The Position

The Sewage Plant Operator at American Water is responsible for the independent operation, maintenance, repair, and inspection of wastewater treatment plants and collection systems. This role ensures compliance with state and federal regulations while performing essential tasks such as collecting wastewater samples, conducting laboratory tests, and maintaining operational logs. The operator will also assist with water collection systems and participate in repairs as needed, contributing to the overall efficiency and safety of the wastewater management process.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • State Class C Wastewater License highly preferred; a combination of experience and lower license may be considered.
  • Three years of experience in the operation of activated sludge plants.
  • Three years of experience working in sewage collection systems.
  • Ability to read gauges and meters and perform accurate mathematical calculations.
  • Hands-on experience with mechanical skills for minor repairs to process equipment and piping.
  • Knowledge of activated sludge treatment for domestic waste and handling of industrial chemicals.
  • Familiarity with health and safety regulations.

Nice To Haves

  • Additional trade-specific courses preferred.
  • Some computer skills, including MS Word, MS Excel, and SCADA systems.

Responsibilities

  • Independently operate, maintain, repair, and inspect wastewater treatment plant and collection systems.
  • Collect and analyze wastewater samples for compliance and process control.
  • Perform maintenance on wastewater systems and general housekeeping duties.
  • Maintain and calibrate monitoring and treatment equipment as required.
  • Record system operation readings and maintain daily logs and operational data.
  • Communicate effectively and respectfully with employees, supervisors, and customers.
  • Assist in repairs of treatment plant equipment and water/sewer main and service repairs.
  • Perform other related functions as assigned.
