About The Position

The position of Service Worker or Domestic Water Technician I/II involves performing a variety of manual, semi-skilled, and skilled duties associated with the construction, installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of the District's domestic water distribution, wastewater treatment, and collection systems equipment and facilities. Under immediate supervision, the Service Worker learns and performs these duties, while the Domestic Water Technician I or II operates under immediate to general supervision, depending on the assignment. Responsibilities include responding to emergency repairs, marking agency facilities, and performing related work as required.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to a High School Diploma.
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License, to be maintained throughout employment.
  • Domestic Water Tech I: Possession of a valid Grade D1 Water Distribution Operators certification by the California State Water Resources Control Board, to be maintained throughout employment.
  • Domestic Water Tech II: Possession of a valid Grade D2 Water Distribution Operators certification by the California State Water Resources Control Board, to be maintained throughout employment.
  • Service Worker: Depending on assignment, one (1) year of experience working in the plumbing, construction or automotive trades.
  • Domestic Water Tech I: One (1) year of experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of public water distribution system equipment and facilities.
  • Domestic Water Tech II: Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience performing duties similar to a Domestic Water Technician I with the District or other similar agency.

Responsibilities

  • Learns and performs a variety of manual, semi-skilled and skilled duties associated with the operation, maintenance, installation, and repair of various District appurtenances including pressure control devices, fire hydrants, valves, compressors, deep well meters, chlorinators, cla-vals, various water mains, water quality sampling stations, and other distribution system appurtenances.
  • Performs a variety of construction work including installation or abandonment of new or existing District facilities and water main tie-ins; digs, spreads, rakes, and shovels asphalt or sub-grade material, pours and finishes concrete collars and slabs by hand; removes old concrete as required.
  • Learns to maintain and repair waterlines and monitor and operate water systems; starts and stops well and booster pumps and checks the operation of automatic control devices; checks packing glands for proper temperature and excessive leakage.
  • Reads and understands recording devices used in pumping operations; makes recommendations to correct water pressure or water quality problems; makes rereads on meters and turns on and off water for customers.
  • Performs a wide variety of manual labor including washing, painting, weeding, raking, shoveling, digging, sweeping, cleaning, and repairing equipment and/or facilities.
  • Loads and unloads supplies, lifts and moves heavy objects, lifts and carries stone, gravel, dirt, timbers, and other materials; carries equipment and materials over rough terrain.
  • Assists in laying pipelines; excavating, backfilling, paving and concrete work.
  • Reports customer complaints received in the field; resolves complaints and problems within the assigned scope of authority and competence.
