We offer a structured progression from entry-level to senior/lead roles, with increasing independence, technical expertise, and leadership responsibilities in commercial HVAC service. Service Technician I (Entry-Level) Often a recent graduate from an accredited trade school or with 3 or fewer years of experience entering the HVAC service field. Focus on preventative maintenance and learning diagnostics under supervision. Attitude, work ethic, and willingness to learn are prioritized over advanced skill level. Key Responsibilities: Conduct preventative maintenance (PMs), inspections, filter changes, belt adjustments, coil cleaning, and basic tune-ups on commercial HVAC equipment. Assist senior technicians with repairs, troubleshooting, installations, and service calls. Document work performed, complete service reports, and maintain clean tools/vehicles. Learn system diagnostics, basic refrigerant handling, safety protocols, and commercial HVAC best practices. Requirements: 0–3 years HVAC service/repair experience (trade school or apprenticeship preferred). High school diploma/GED; eagerness to obtain EPA certification. Basic mechanical aptitude and strong desire to grow. Service Technician II (Mid-Level) Qualified techs with required accreditations and generally more than 3 years of experience. Skilled in maintaining and servicing commercial-grade HVAC equipment with increasing independence. Key Responsibilities: Independently perform preventative maintenance, basic diagnostics, repairs, and servicing on commercial HVAC systems (e.g., rooftop units, split systems, package units). Troubleshoot common issues, replace components (motors, capacitors, thermostats, etc.), and handle refrigerant recovery/recharge (with proper certification). Respond to service calls, communicate effectively with customers, and ensure high-quality, timely work. Mentor Level I techs and maintain accurate records/documentation. Requirements: 3+ years HVAC service/repair experience in commercial settings. EPA Section 608 certification (Type II or Universal strongly preferred). Proficiency in commercial HVAC maintenance, basic troubleshooting, and tools. Service Technician III (Senior/Journeyman-Level) Experienced techs with required accreditations and more than 5 years of experience. Qualified to work independently on full maintenance and service for a wide variety of commercial air-conditioning and HVAC equipment. Key Responsibilities: Independently diagnose, repair, maintain, and service complex commercial HVAC systems (including chillers, VAVs, boilers, controls, and unitary equipment up to large tonnage). Perform advanced troubleshooting, system startups, retrofits, energy-efficiency recommendations, and major component replacements. Lead service calls, coordinate with customers and project teams, ensure code/regulatory compliance, and deliver exceptional service. Mentor junior techs (I & II) and contribute to team safety/efficiency. Requirements: 5+ years progressive commercial HVAC service/repair experience. EPA Section 608 certification (Universal preferred). Strong diagnostic skills, knowledge of controls/DDC, and versatility across equipment types. Service Technician IV (Lead/Master-Level) Senior experts who lead complex service projects, mentor teams, and support operational excellence. (Note: This level aligns with advanced/lead responsibilities in commercial HVAC service.) Key Responsibilities: Lead high-priority or technically challenging service jobs, including major repairs, system overhauls, troubleshooting, and optimization of advanced HVAC plants (e.g., chillers, central plants). Oversee junior techs on-site, provide training/mentorship, ensure quality/safety standards, and coordinate with dispatch/field leadership. Offer technical guidance to customers, recommend upgrades/preventative programs, and participate in planning for large accounts or high-risk calls. Drive continuous improvement, support team development, and uphold Modigent service excellence. Requirements: 7–10+ years commercial HVAC experience with proven mastery. EPA Universal certification and additional credentials (e.g., NATE, journeyman license, specialized training) preferred. Leadership skills, advanced diagnostics, and expertise in wet-side/dry-side systems.
