About The Position

Service Technicians of all levels must possess varying knowledge and skill levels to accomplish technical and labor tasks assigned by the Job Lead or Project Technical & QA/QC Supervisors. A paramount requirement is sufficient skill and knowledge in technical and labor tasks to effectively carry out the outlined duties. Service Technicians also perform regular non-job lead work, typically of the same kind and level as that done by the group being led. Non-technical tasks include On-The-Job Training / Mentoring of technicians at all levels to accelerate knowledge and skills acquisition, especially for senior-level technicians with technical expertise. They are responsible for signing off competency-based skills in the Technician Training Competency Skills Book and providing OJT/Mentoring on 'Condition As Found' & 'As Left' data collection, identification of drive/shaft line components, Optical and Laser Alignment Checks, various Marine & Industrial technical works, and report writing. They must also comprehend service & technical reports and identify required works from them. Every Operational Technician at DATUM RMS is responsible for upholding the company's reputation and standard of work & service on every project and non-project work. This is achieved through self-motivated learning via the DATUM RMS Training pathway, increasing technical and skills knowledge through on-the-job training and mentoring, demonstrating personal integrity, accountability, attention to detail, honesty, leadership, and efficiency, fostering teamwork towards common goals, comprehending Project Work Orders, and identifying/reporting new/additional works, scope creep, inefficiencies, AWA Estimate opportunities, risks, safety issues, problem-solving, resource management, technical competence, and quality assurance and control.

Requirements

Sufficient skill in and knowledge of the technical and labor tasks to effectively carry out the duties of Service Technicians
Technical knowledge, expertise, skills, and competency (for senior level technicians)
Knowledge of the reason for Condition ‘As Found’ & ‘As Left’ data collection and how it is used to identify actual & potential technical issues
Knowledge of which Condition ‘As Found’ & ‘As Left’ data is required for what job tasks
Knowledge of correct procedures and techniques to obtain data
Ability to use correct tooling to record data
Knowledge of recording procedures
Identification, knowledge, and comprehension of purpose of drive / shaft line components, and configurations
Ability to perform Optical Alignment Checks
Ability to perform Laser Alignment Checks
Ability to perform any and all other technical works – Marine & Industrial
Ability to perform report writing per the DATUM RMS standard service & technical reports or clients
Comprehension of service & technical reports, and ability to identify required works from the reports

Responsibilities

Attending pre-works brief with the team on the project job/task instructions with assigned labor hours, as received from Project Job Lead, Project Technical & QA/QC Supervisors and project Work Order
Performing primary assessments of project: General ‘Condition as Found’ report: Work Area conditions, General condition of equipment/machinery, Cleanliness and safety concerns, e.g., bilges with oil/flammables
Taking photos and completion of ‘Job Technical Specifications’ form
Identifying obvious change to original scope of work per the Work Order
Identifying AWA Estimate opportunities at onset of project
Getting work started, e.g., comprehension of the immediate tasks to be performed by individual technicians of the team, safety review, and tooling required to perform the task
Working with the team and setting the work pace
Demonstrating proper work methods
Seeing to it that needed plans, blueprints, materials, and tools are available, and that required parts/materials were ordered in advance to be obtained from procurement department and supply locations
Obtaining needed information or decisions from Project Job Lead on actual & potential problems/issues that come up during the project works
Maintaining a current knowledge, and answering questions of other workers on procedures, policies, written instructions, Quality Assurance (QA)/Quality Control (QC) to identify AWA opportunities from scope creep, and other directives (for example, technical orders)
Ensuring efficiency - Seeing to it that there is enough work to keep everyone in the work crew busy
Performing Quality Assurance (QA)/Quality Control (QC) work while in progress and when finished to see whether the Job Lead & Project Technical & QA/QC Supervisors instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, AWA opportunities and deadlines have been met
Directing other workers to follow instructions received from Job Lead & Project Technical & QA/QC Supervisors, and to meet deadlines
Assuring that health/safety and environment (HSE), safe work practices, and housekeeping rules are followed, and understood within the team
Reporting to Project Job Lead on status and progress of work, and causes of work delays
Answering questions of the Project Job Lead on specific work/task operations e.g.: Task progress, Task Scope creep, Additional identified works, AWA opportunities, Parts and materials required, not previously ordered, Sub-contractor requirements, e.g., Hydraulics, Gas Free Certification, Equipment requirements, e.g., Forklifts, specialized equipment, Additional on-the-job training requirements for individual employees
Creation of Technical & Service Reports for projects per company Policy & Standard Operating Procedures, ensuring they are formatted per company expectations and contain accurate date
Identify technical tasks that require Standard Operating Procedures, and/or training for technicians
Identify work procedures that require updating/modification, and additional training for technicians
Identify technicians performing substandard works, applying poor work practices, undertaking work processes in an unsafe manner that may cause accidents to fellow employees, customers or other company workers, or damage to customers property, shipyard property, and report to management
Report and assist with investigation for Accident & Incident Reports for all incidents /accidents
Assist with the facilitation of in-house training, including instruction as required
Sign-off of technical competencies for lower-level Technicians in their Technician Training Competency Skills Book
Performing any additional tasks that require the technical, training, and supervisory knowledge and skills possessed by Project Service Technicians
On-The-Job Training / Mentoring of technicians of all levels, in new tasks/jobs to accelerate knowledge and skills acquisition
Signing off competency-based skills in Technician Training Competency Skills Book
