At this Martinez, CA refinery location, you will play a hands‑on role ensuring the reliability and performance of critical water treatment systems. Position Summary The Support Engineer will provide on-site technical support, monitoring, and optimization of Solenis water treatment programs at a major oil refinery. This role is field‑focused and involves sampling, testing, equipment inspections, data analysis, and troubleshooting to ensure maximum reliability of cooling towers, boilers, wastewater systems, and process water applications. This is an ideal opportunity for individuals who enjoy working in an industrial environment, solving problems, and collaborating with both Solenis and refinery personnel.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in environmental science, chemistry, engineering, industrial technology, or related field OR equivalent technical experience in an industrial setting.
  • Ability to perform field sampling, testing, and mechanical inspections.
  • Strong data interpretation and problem‑solving skills.
  • Comfortable working in refinery environments (elevated walkways, outdoor conditions, confined systems).
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to work on-site full time.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in water treatment, refinery operations, chemical feed systems, or industrial utilities (boilers/cooling towers).
  • Familiarity with analytical instruments (Hach, Micrometer, corrosion probes, controllers).
  • Understanding of refinery safety standards (e.g., TWIC, OSHA, LOTO, confined space procedures).

Responsibilities

  • Water Treatment Monitoring & Testing Perform routine sampling and analysis of cooling water, boiler water, wastewater, and other process water systems.
  • Conduct field tests including corrosion, conductivity, pH, ORP, hardness, alkalinity, polymer residuals, and microbiological activity.
  • Maintain and calibrate analytical and monitoring equipment.
  • System Optimization & Troubleshooting Monitor chemical feed systems, pumps, controllers, and automation equipment to ensure optimal performance.
  • Identify system abnormalities (e.g., scaling, fouling, corrosion, microbiological growth) and recommend corrective actions.
  • Assist in root‑cause analysis for water-related operational issues.
  • Data & Reporting Collect, interpret, and trend operational data using digital tools and Solenis platforms.
  • Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly reports that summarize trends, findings, and improvement recommendations.
  • Communicate clearly with refinery operations, maintenance, and engineering teams.
  • Chemical & Equipment Support Ensure proper delivery, storage, and inventory management of Solenis chemicals on-site.
  • Support installation and maintenance of Solenis water treatment feed systems, sensors, controllers, and monitoring devices.
  • Verify correct dosage and adjust feed rates as needed.
  • Compliance & Safety Follow all Solenis and refinery safety protocols, including PPE, hazard communication, and entry procedures.
  • Participate in required refinery safety training and maintain compliance with site-specific regulations.
  • Assist with environmental reporting and ensure water systems meet regulatory and permit requirements.
