About The Position

This position involves performing as a skilled technician who follows specific policies, procedures, and methods in responding to written and verbal instructions regarding the installation, inspection, testing, repair, and adjustment of all types and models of gas utilization appliances, equipment, and systems for residential, commercial, and industrial users. The technician may also perform duties as Installer 1/C, Tank Truck Driver, Cylinder Driver, or Meter Reader as required.

Requirements

  • Preferably a high school graduate with technical schooling.
  • Completed all required DOT Federal/State, OSHA Federal/State, and NFPA courses or programs.
  • Must maintain minimum passing scores for all recurring Federal/State and NFPA courses.
  • Must possess a valid Class B, CDL license with Hazardous Material endorsement.
  • Must have a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate and appropriate clearance certificate such as TWIC.
  • Satisfactory completion of in-house Service Technician Training and Field Evaluation.
  • At least four years of successful and progressive experience, with two years as a Service Technician III.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to effectively install, repair, test, and adjust gas appliances, equipment, and systems.
  • Very good working knowledge of departmental operating rules, pertinent codes, regulations, and safety rules.
  • Proficient in the proper use of tools, materials, and equipment of the trade.
  • Must be a safe and competent driver with a clean traffic abstract.
  • Ability to use a computer.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects and tests appliances, equipment, and associated systems on customers' premises.
  • Checks high pressure service for dust, water, or plug.
  • Discusses major repairs or parts with customers and initiates M-tags.
  • Uses human senses, leak-detecting solution, and gas detection or measurement equipment to detect problems.
  • Cleans, adjusts, repairs, changes, or replaces burners, pilot lights, controls, flues, gas cocks, valves, house and appliance regulators, defective or old age meters, or any other part pertaining to the operation of appliances, equipment, and systems.
  • Verifies that problems have been corrected using leak-detecting solution and gas detection or measurement equipment.
  • Locks, unlocks, reads, changes, and removes meters; initiates plugged service.
  • Delivers cylinders as directed.
  • Investigates high bill complaints and completes service orders.
  • Collects money on C.O.D. orders and properly accounts for revenues collected.
  • Functions as a first responder in gas-related situations such as fires, leaks, broken pipes, or explosions.
  • Performs necessary emergency repairs and directs personnel at emergency sites.
  • Provides courteous and tactful service to customers.
  • Drives service truck and maintains necessary truck supplies and equipment.
  • Performs clerical and administrative duties such as preparing reports and inputting data.
  • Works in a safe and responsible manner, complying with safety rules and regulations.
  • Performs related and other work as required and/or directed.
