About The Position

The Appraisal Technician / Vehicle Inspector is responsible for performing quick, accurate, and thorough inspections on incoming vehicles being considered for trade or purchase. This role exists to provide the sales department with clear, reliable information so they can put the correct amount of money on the vehicle, properly factor in reconditioning costs, and avoid over-allowing on trades due to missed mechanical or cosmetic issues. Inspections are expected to be completed within 20–30 minutes per vehicle using a standardized check sheet for documentation.

Requirements

  • Basic understanding of automotive systems (engine, transmission, suspension, brakes, steering, electrical).
  • Ability to visibly identify deficiencies and issues during a quick visual inspection and road test.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Strong attention to detail and consistency in following a process.
  • Ability to work efficiently within tight time frames without sacrificing thoroughness.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, especially when explaining vehicle conditions to Recon leadership.
  • Basic computer or tablet skills for entering inspections into dealership systems (if applicable).
  • Must be available to work Monday through Friday until 8:00 p.m.
  • Must be available to work Saturdays as part of the regular schedule.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and stoop for extended periods.
  • Ability to get in and out of various vehicles throughout the day.
  • Ability to lift up to ~25–50 lbs occasionally (e.g., wheels, components).
  • Work performed both indoors and outdoors, in varying weather conditions.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in an automotive environment (service, detail, quick lane, reconditioning, or similar) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform visual and basic mechanical inspections on all vehicles presented for appraisal, following the dealership’s inspection checklist.
  • Inspect for and accurately document: Fluid leaks (engine oil, transmission, coolant, power steering, etc.).
  • Worn, broken, or missing components (suspension, steering, brakes, belts, hoses, exhaust, etc.).
  • Tire condition (tread depth, uneven wear, age, damage).
  • Brake condition (remaining pad/shoe material, rotors/drums where visible).
  • Obvious mechanical concerns (noises, vibrations, warning lights, poor drivability).
  • Exterior condition (dents, scratches, rust, collision damage, body panel alignment).
  • Interior condition (seat wear, odors, stains, damaged trim, electronics functionality).
  • Glass and lighting (cracked windshields, inoperative lights, mirrors).
  • Conduct a short road test when appropriate to identify driveability concerns, such as: Engine performance issues (misfires, hesitation, lack of power).
  • Transmission or drivetrain concerns (slipping, harsh shifts, noises).
  • Steering, suspension, and brake performance (pulling, pulsation, clunks, vibrations).
  • Unusual noises, smells, or warning lights that appear under driving conditions.
  • Clearly record all noted issues on the inspection check sheet, using consistent terminology.
  • Report all inspection findings directly to the Recon Manager or Recon Advisor, not to the sales department.
  • Review the completed check sheet with the Recon Manager/Advisor and help clarify the severity and potential impact of findings on reconditioning costs.
  • Ensure the Recon Manager/Advisor receives timely, accurate information so they can effectively communicate vehicle condition and reconditioning needs to the sales team.
  • Support a consistent process and feedback loop between Recon and Sales to help prevent missed items and over-allowing on trades.
  • Complete each assigned inspection within the 20–30 minute target time frame without sacrificing accuracy.
  • Use the provided check sheet for every vehicle and ensure it is fully and legibly completed.
  • Follow dealership and manufacturer safety guidelines at all times while inspecting and test-driving vehicles.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area and contribute to a safe, professional environment.
