About The Position

The Service and Repair Mechanic (Motor Equipment) position at the New York State Department of Transportation involves diagnosing and correcting faulty vehicle and equipment operations. Responsibilities include overhauling, adjusting, and repairing gaseous fuel engines, clutches, transmissions, differentials, and various complex systems such as ignition, wiring, lighting, fuel, cooling, braking, and hydraulic systems. The role also requires conducting NYS inspections, overhauling and rebuilding starters, generators, compressors, pumps, and a variety of other equipment including track vehicles, loaders, cranes, and hydraulic excavators. The mechanic will also diagnose and repair electronic engine control systems, anti-lock brake systems, and air conditioning. Additional duties may include cutting and welding, making road calls, test driving equipment, completing reports, and utilizing department fleet management software. Overtime is required, especially during the Winter Maintenance Season when shifts may vary.

Requirements

  • Four years of experience as an automotive or diesel mechanic responsible for diagnosing faulty vehicle and/or equipment operation.
  • Successful completion of the New York State Department of Labor approved Diesel Engine Mechanic apprenticeship.
  • An Associate's degree in automotive or diesel repair technology.
  • Must obtain a valid NYS Inspection Certification within one year of appointment.
  • Must obtain a valid New York State Class B Commercial Driver's License with no air brake restriction within one year of appointment.
  • Pass a pre-employment physical/medical examination and drug test.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduation from a technical or vocational program in automotive or diesel technology may substitute for one year of experience.
  • Graduation from a one-year post high school certificate program in automotive or diesel repair technology may substitute for up to two years of experience.

Responsibilities
