The Service and Repair Mechanic (Motor Equipment) position at the New York State Department of Transportation involves diagnosing and correcting faulty vehicle and equipment operations. Responsibilities include overhauling, adjusting, and repairing gaseous fuel engines, clutches, transmissions, differentials, and various complex systems such as ignition, wiring, lighting, fuel, cooling, braking, and hydraulic systems. The role also requires conducting NYS inspections, overhauling and rebuilding starters, generators, compressors, pumps, and a variety of other equipment including track vehicles, loaders, cranes, and hydraulic excavators. The mechanic will also diagnose and repair electronic engine control systems, anti-lock brake systems, and air conditioning. Additional duties may include cutting and welding, making road calls, test driving equipment, completing reports, and utilizing department fleet management software. Overtime is required, especially during the Winter Maintenance Season when shifts may vary.
