About The Position

The Service and Repair Mechanic (Auto Body) position at the New York State Thruway Authority involves performing skilled tasks related to the maintenance and repair of auto body equipment. This role requires a journey-level mechanic to handle various repair tasks, including body, fender, and chassis repairs, while supervising helpers and maintaining shop operations.

Requirements

• Four years of experience under the supervision of an auto body mechanic or completion of an apprenticeship program.
• Possession of a driver's license appropriate to the equipment operated and repaired.
• Possession and maintenance of a CDL Class B license issued by the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles is required.
• Candidates without a CDL B license must obtain a CDL permit within 30 days of appointment and the license by the end of the probationary period.
• Pre-employment drug and alcohol testing is required, along with random testing once appointed.

Responsibilities

• Perform skilled body, fender, and chassis repair under general supervision.
• Repaint equipment owned or maintained by the Thruway Authority, including cleaning, sand blasting, grinding, filling, and priming.
• Remove damaged chassis parts and straighten frames and other related parts.
• Perform restoration welding and fabrication scraping.
• Remove, replace, or repair body parts such as glass, body panels, upholstery, fenders, running boards, grills, and accessories.
• Supervise helpers and other journey-level employees engaged in maintenance and repair of motorized equipment.
• Maintain necessary time and cost distribution records.
• Requisition parts and equipment as necessary.
• Maintain and be responsible for a Tool Crib Complement assigned to the Shop.
• Ensure that all equipment and tools are in proper condition and maintain the Shop in a clean and workable condition.
• Drive passenger cars and trucks as necessary.
